My first diary - I've been wanting to write for weeks but it took a slap in the face to push me over the edge.
I guess I am an idiot for not seeing it coming. I know, I know - its the economy stupid! I have had entirely too much time during the day lately to read kos diaries and get fired up about politics.
But seriously, my company had a billion dollar backlog - over 18 months worth. You would think we would have been saved from the devastation of the market. But credit markets tighten up and construction funds dry up. No building and then not much need for Project Accountants to count the beans (or bricks).
My boss thought I should be grateful because my termination reason was "Lack of Work" so I qualify for Unemployment Insurance. One of those "handouts" I am grateful for. But frankly, unemployment won't cover the mortgage let alone heating the place through a Chicago winter. And Cobra is going to eat me alive... Don't get me wrong - I am grateful I have it. I have so many pre-existing conditions that God himself wouldn't insure me.
I got a really great severance check too - $29. Heck with the gas prices so low now, that fills 3/4 of my tank.
I was having a really great week too... My background is in Construction Engineering and Wednesday I passed an incredibly difficult Certification Exam. I am now a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional. Sustainable living and design are passions of mine.
So...anyone need a LEED AP Project Accountant?
((UPDATE))Thank you Daily Kos - I really appreciate the good thoughts and kind comments. And tidalwave1 points out a silver lining. I can now spend the next two weeks volunteering for Obama. LEED LOVING MAMA for OBAMA! I think Indiana would look quite nice in blue don't you?
