Although I have read Kos for a while now, I only recently registered and I never thought I'd actually post something until tonight.  After seeing Rep. Bachmann's nightmarish bit on Hardball I immediately donated $20 to the campaign of her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, and then wrote Michele Bachmann the email below.

I've lived in Minnesota for 17 years and I am ashamed that this woman represents any part of this fine State.

Ms. Bachmann,

I just saw the interview you did on 10/17/2008 with Chris Mathews on Hardball.  I was literally nauseated by your performance during which you basically called for a McCarthy-esque witch hunt to find out which members of Congress are "Anti-American".  Here is one of your quotes,  "What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look.  I wish they would.  I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or Anti-America?  I think the American people would love to see an expose like that."

You actually think that’s what the American people want?  Some sort of litmus test to see who is pro-American enough?  For who – you?  Do you suppose you are qualified to make those assessments?  Do you believe that such a pogrom would be beneficial for the country?  Are you under the impression that other members of the various branches of the U.S. Government are of a like mind or did you come to this point of view on your own?  Because if there are those among your fellows who share your conviction, I’d surely like to know their names.

In addition to your call for a patriotic inquisition, you repeatedly used terms such as "radical left", "liberal", and "anti-American" interchangeably.  One can only surmise, therefore, that you believe all liberals to be enemies of the United States of America.  By extension, that means you believe that I, an admitted liberal, to be an enemy, too.  My, my, my... .  I’m simply thunderstruck.  Ms. Bachmann, that is an extremely radical position you’ve staked out.  I’d go so far as to say you are on the very edge of fertile ground – way out on the fringe.

While I believe you are entitled to your opinion, I am also sure that few other Americans feel the way you do.  I am quite certain that your constituents don’t either.  And although I live in Minneapolis and not in your district, I felt compelled to make a contribution to Elwyn Tinklenberg earlier this evening in the hope that he will soundly defeat you in your re-election bid next month and that you will thrown out of your office in ignominy, for you are surely unfit for your position.  I hope you enjoyed your brief stint in Congress.  Once you are unceremoniously voted out a few weeks hence, I will use every legal means at my disposal to prevent you from holding any public office anywhere ever again.

In the spirit of respectful competition John McCain told Barack Obama and the other guests at the Al Smith dinner on Thursday, 10/16/08, "I can't wish my opponent luck, but I do wish him well."

Ms. Bachmann, I wish you neither.

If you'd like to help beat Michele Bachmann, go to Elwyn Tinklenberg's campaign site and donate.

You might also like to tell Ms. Bachmann what you think of her.

Thanks all,

Update: El Tinklenberg has posted a thank you for all of the support!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

    to you!

This kind of hate talk is unaccrptable. You are right, we cannot just stand by and say, oh, well she is a wingnut, but she is entitled to speak.

As a member of Congress she has the responsibility to understand and support our Constitution right to disagree with her party and her philosophy without being accused of being Un-American and by implication - a traitor to the country we love as well.

Thank you for doing so elequently.

I would also send it as a LTE to your local newspaper - saying this this Congressperson's speech reflects badly on all Minnesotans because it implies that she represents Minnesotans views on the political diversity that exists in our country and which actually makes our country STRONG not weak.

    Good luck.

Write to your OWN congressperson expressing dismay that the slanderous innuendos put forth by her are  unbefitting of a sitting Congressperson and echoes an ugly chapter in our history that should not be re-visited.

        Dear Congress:

I was shocked and appalled at the positions stated by Michele Bachmann on Hardball with Chris Matthews on Friday evening, October 17.

For a sitting member of Congress to slander Americans as anti-American because their beliefs do not match her own is bad enough. Our country is founded on the premise that speech is a protected right of ALL Americans and diversity and discussion of opposing philosophies is not only possible but necessary for a strong democracy.

But when Bachmann goes further and advocates for investigations into people's Americanism - well that smacks of McCarthyism in its worst form. Innuendo, lies, slanders that there are anti-Americans in Congress (and by extension throughout America) and and then linking any possible "un-Americanism" to liberalism and left-minded people is UNACCEPTABLE in the 21st pluralistic USA.

I ask that you censure Michele Bachmann and assure the American people that having a different vision of a strong America does NOT mean you are anti-American. Americans should not be feel threatened  for expressing their views and taking actions  for fear "investigations" that could  lead to the limiting of political freedoms and the right to participate in our government.

Her comments were absolutely over the line.  To think that a member of Congress would make such statements is... mind boggling.

I cannot believe you represent Minnesota. Your interview with Chris Matthews was horrible. I am seething that you could represent liberals as anti-American. I hope you are defeated and will donate as much as I can to El. Terrible and humiliating to those in Minnesota.

every time some wingnut says "leftist," "liberal," or "Anti-American" we donate to Obama, Tinkerbell, oopsI mean Tinklenberg, (too much Disney in this house), or whomever their opponent is, and make sure we CRUSH them completely.

Just charge it - you'll actually help the economy. It may take us twp years to pay it all off, but they'd be a nice, liberal, leftist two years!

    Recommended by:

. . . is rolling over in his grave tonight. Here's the text of my letter to this cancerous woman:

    Ms. Bachmann:

My grandfather used to live in Stillwater -- where you ostensibly go to church -- and was two-term Republican Senator in Minnesota until he too ran into the Depression-induced landslide that ran Republicans out of office in 1930. A kinder, more caring man you'll never have a chance to meet.

And he would be absolutely appalled by the hate-filled attitudes manifested in your appearance on Hardball this evening. He knew that men and women come in all colors and attitudes, but each brought their own experiences to the American table. And to brainlessly suggest that someone who met someone else who did bad things or saw politics different from him was "un-American" would sadden him beyond description. At the core of your attack was stupidity and dishonesty in even trying to describe Obama's connection to Ayers -- we know more than we need to know to conclude that it was more distant than those he had with thousands of people whose patriotism and love for America is beyond question.

But beyond that was the assumption that those who disagree with you politically were less than American or loved it less than you. I guess you're younger than I am and don't recall the hole that McCarthyism and its charges of "un-Americanism" tore in the fabric of our society. At least there, those who were villified usually had some connection to a working Communist Party of the United States, however weak it may have been. Here, however, you smear people who've never done anything but show love for America by fighting for their side of an argument, and that fight -- if reasonably fought -- is good for the country by keeping the politicians on their toes and the powerful wary of abusing their power. But anyone who knows history knows that condemning people with the most slanderous of terms -- anti-American -- for disagreeing with you and even for listening to those who say hateful things about America takes into a dark, dark place. For me, and for America, I'm horrified.

You don't need my advice on any matters of religion -- or at least think you don't. But, if you think there's any connection between any form of Christianity that I've been raised with and your hateful speech tonight, I fear you've gone astray. But, you don't need to accept my opinion. Though my grandfather's been gone for 22 years, I know this is one opinion that he and I -- sadly -- would share. Tonight, Minnesota weeps.

    Dear Ms. Bachmann -

You are a symbol of everything that is wrong with America. You make a mockery of our democratic process, and what we can represent to the world.

It is important that our process remain respectful and law abiding, yet you and others like you only believe in corruption, loopholes, and oppression. Your false lawsuit that you have urged on the ACORN group is laughable, and a pathetic attempt to whine in advance when your party loses the Presidential election.

After hearing you idiotic, Macarthyistic and completely un-American comments on Hardball, Oct 17, 2008, about putting a litmus test on the Patriotism of Congressional leaders in office, it completely disgusted me. Stop whining about the "liberal media" and face up to the truth. Accept accountability for the mistakes of the past 8 years, and perhaps I could come back and respect the Republican Party.

I have never before in my life donated money to campaigns before, but this election it is different. My eyes have been open to the cancer that you and your Republican Party has brought about this great nation.

I am making it my personal mission to ensure that you are voted out of office. I will donate to your opposer and to the DNC to the maximum extent allowed.

If you should ever run for office again, I will donate thousands to ensure you never ever have a chance to ruin our country ever again.

However, every time you say something completely moronic or offensive I will happily donate another thousand to your opponent. Moreover, I will ensure that the message spreads so that others will also donate to the DNC.
