I was watching Mr. Colin Powell as he harpooned the Republican smear machine on CNN. Mr. Colin Powell's discourse was similar to verbal thrashing that Joe McCarthy took from the Army attorney Joseph Welch that reverberates today.
"Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
I was inspired by Mr. Powell and infuriated when I read the story of Ohio GOP Senator's George Voinovich's smearing of Senator Obama as a socialist on Huffington Post and fired off an e-mail letter to my senator.
Here is my letter to Voinovich, which I must preference that I don't vote for parties, I vote for candidates, therefore I am independent but consider myself a conservative democrat. Yes, I have voted for Voinovich for Governor and Senator in Ohio for one big reason he is from Cleveland and takes care of northern Ohio. Voinovich was one of the best mayors of Cleveland and once in awhile disagreed with the Bush Administration and so his smear caught me off guard.
Dear Senator Voinovich
As an Ohioan and an Independent voter I am ashamed of your behavior in smearing fellow Senator Obama as a socialist.
I have voted for you in every election and have admired you as one of our best of the buckeye state. Is your friend and fellow Senator McCain so desperate to win the presidency that you and McCain will soil your own reputations to regurgitate lies?
All Senator McCain has is smears and lies and no plan for the future of this country. I will not be voting for Mr. McCain because of this and his lack of judgment in picking an unqualified vice presidential candidate.
If you want to have my continued support, I suggest you choose your words wisely and stick to the issues.
Respectfully Yours
I think we all need to shame, embarrass and make the Republican smear merchants accountable for their smears and lies.
"Have you no sense of decency" - Should be our response to the bombardment of hateful smear speeches!
We need to berate the messenger about their shameful words and call a spade a spade. These smearing words revert to the worst of America and they imply - Racism, Intolerance, McCarthyism, Anti-Intellectualism, Sexism, Fascism and Hate.
We need to take back our country and work together and not against one another on the great national and internation problems that face our great nation and I will close with a final quote by Abraham Lincoln.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand."
