A diary on the Rec List points out that NC ballots do not include votes for president. While this is true, please do not call the Obama campaign to let them know. I promise you they are already informed.
There is no urgent action required. If you are making calls to NC for GOTV, by all means remind whoever you talk to that a straight party vote does not include president. But there is nothing nefarious going on.
This ballot design is required by State Law:
N.C.G.S. § 163-165.6 (e) Straight-Party Voting. - Each official ballot shall be arranged so that the voter may cast one vote for a party's nominees for all offices except President and Vice President. A vote for President and Vice President shall be cast separately from a straight-party vote. The official ballot shall be prepared so that a voter may cast a straight-party vote, but then make an exception to that straight-party vote by voting for a candidate not nominated by that party or by voting for fewer than all the candidates nominated by that party. Instructions for general election ballots shall clearly advise voters of the rules in this subsection and of the statutes providing for the counting of ballots.
It was done so in the 1960's when the Dixiecrats who controlled the legislature and governor's office were concerned about sharing the ticket with the Presidential nominee.
It should be changed back, but the other thing is, the ballot is not all that confusing. Here's the ballot from Chapel Hill; and here's the one from Charlotte. The other thing is, the people at the polling place do a good job of informing people, as do the newspapers.
By all means, remind your friends and family, or anyone you talk to in the NC GOTV effort--or even better, be a poll monitor and remind them before they vote or bring a sign and stand outside your local polling place. But please, don't call the Obama campaign or the Board of Elections, they already know.
