Yet another unexpected endorsement by a paper that hasn't endorsed a democrat in decades (in this case 50 years)

The Bryan Eagle in Bryan/College Station, TX has followed the lead of fellow Texas papers like the Houston Chronicle and Austin American-Statesman in endorsing Barack Obama for President. It's not a huge paper but it's the hometown paper of Bryan/College Station, best known as the home of Texas A&M University (also the home of the George Bush Presidential Library).
In Texas, UT is the liberal school. TAMU is the conservative school with its Corps of Cadets and agricultural and military background. It's not surprising the Austin paper would endorse Obama, it's a shocker the Eagle endorsed Obama.
In fact, it's been at least 50 years since the Eagle has endorsed a democrat for President. They couldn't even endorse LBJ in 1964 - instead they decided to not make an endorsement.
While this is a nice and pleasant surprise, it's not likely to make a huge difference in Texas politics. Quite frankly, the students attending A&M aren't going to vote for Obama at the same rate that you will find with most universities. Yes, they'll vote more for Obama than the general populace of B-CS. I suppose if the endorsement can help sway the opinion of some of the more than 45,000 TAMU students from McCain to Obama, then it's very good news.
