I'm hesitating to post this, because I'm a newbie here. I've only been addicted to this website since the last part of the primary battle, I'm not an old hand here. In general the level of discourse here has been pretty civilized, even in the comments section, which is impressive. But I'm disturbed over the last several days as the McCain mudslinging seems to be having an effect on the people here.
I've noticed more and more comments saying direct derogatory things about McCain himself, and Sarah Palin and their spouses, for example that Cindy and Todd must have been the ones to slash the tires at the Obama rally. I know that was a joke, but it was in poor taste and makes the community look bad, yet the comment was recced.
Much worse, however, is the diary on the main page by Jed L entitled "What Is John McCain's Problem With Women?" In it he calls McCain a total psycho, "without air quotes." It is just as wrong for us to call McCain a total psycho as it is for the freepers to call Obama a terrorist. Neither is neither, and both remarks are very inflammatory.
I guess I'm just calling for a little civility--by all means, let us attack McCain's dirty fighting, his platform and his judgment and character. But in attacking his character, we must focus on fact and incidents on record, by all means let's talk about the Keating 5. Enough with the psycho and tire-slashing talk please, we have more than enough legitimate stuff to fight him with!
