Can't say I'm surprised...
In a fit of indignation, John McCain apparently feels so slighted by John Lewis's comments and Barack Obama's failure to repudiate them, that Rick Davis has been quoted:
"Now since then, I must say, when Congressman Lewis calls John McCain and Sarah Palin and his entire group of supporters, fifty million people strong around this country, that we're all racists and we should be compared to George Wallace and the kind of horrible segregation and evil and horrible politics that was played at that time, you know, that you've got to rethink all these things. And so I think we're in the process of looking at how we're going to close this campaign. We've got 19 days, and we're taking serious all these issues."

This wouldn't have anything to do with being behind in the polls with only a couple of weeks to go, would it? Or is that me just being cynical?
After an apparent commitment to not use the Rev. Wright, the last-ditch twitch of a dying campaign are about to go there. The polls are tightening, one more heave to rile the base just might do it and push them over the top in a spitting fury of race-baiting, fear and loathing.
McCain has reportedly avoided discussion of Wright because of its racial implications. Apparently, since he already stands accused of stoking crowd anger akin to the South in the 1960s, his campaign just might be willing to walk down that slippery slope and risk justifying Lewis' proclamation.
What absolutely staggers me each time is the constant thin-skinned responses from John McCain to anything Obama does or does not do. Is his so-called honour so fragile that it has to be called into question by the scurrilous and wholly unwarranted claims that his campaign has become underhanded and dirty? Because they've been called out as racists so they may as well live up these claims?
Or did Colin Powell, by so obviously allying himself with a man of colour merely give them the excuse to follow the path that Rush Limbaugh so clearly laid out before them?
All across the nation, Obama supporters and workers are being harassed and abused, people are hanging effigies, death threats have been made, yet there are further depths to plumb from the corpse of the Southern Strategy?
To paraphrase Cindy McCain:
It sends a cold chill through my body let me tell you.
Nation First? Goddamn America indeed.
