ThinkProgress has reported that Sarah Palin claimed the vice president is "in charge of the U.S. Senate."
In an interview with KUSA in Colorado, Palin responds to the following question:
Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, "What does the Vice President do?"
PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! ... [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.
Mainstream media should be all over this story. Palin made a major gaffe in her V.P. debate when she announced vice presidential powers that are not outlined in the Constitution, and which reflect the will of Dick Cheney. She demonstrated herself to be not a student of history, but a student of neo-conservatism.
This is no longer an issue of whether Palin is smart enough to be vice president. It is becoming all too clear that she is the empty vessel through which neo-conservatism wants to live and breathe in the White House for another four years.
Her unabashed ignorance is certainly breathtaking. But people already know that she is ignorant on any number of critical domestic and foreign policy issues. People now need to understand that she is a dangerous public figure who, if unchecked, will further weaken our federal government's balance of power, and thus will create a system that undermines one of the key principles of our Constitution.
This comment is all the more puzzling because this is at least the 2nd time she has said this. Gov Palin needs to re-read or perhaps read for the first time the Constitution. While the Vice President presides over the Senate, he or she is not in charge of it. Article 1 says The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided.
The Senate is part of a co-equal branch of the federal government.
This year we've seen increasingly effective rapid response from Democrats. It was not long ago when a conservative charge or a lie went unanswered for days or weeks or longer. I'm new to Daily Kos, having spent my previous life writing op-eds for newspapers and other paper media outlets. It's been extraordinary to see such a powerful rapid response from all of the great commenters below, highlighted by Harry Reid's staff not giving an inch to an unelected, wanna-be V.P. Rock on, everybody.
