I'm yet another person who desperately wants to have a big Democratic win in two weeks. I'm a bit of a slave to my work, which tends to limit my free time for volunteering, so I try to make up for it with the plus side of working all the time: I can afford to donate.
I made a $2300 donation to Obama for America (through www.barackobama.com) just prior to the 2008 Democratic Convention, which ran from August 25th through August 28th.
In the last couple of days, I've been receiving emails from the campaign that seem to imply I can still donate, though I thought I'd contributed the maximum:
Your generosity has gotten us this far, but the need is more urgent right now than it will ever be. Our records show you are at most $2,300 from reaching your individual contribution limit.
Will you strengthen this movement in the final stretch by going All-In for Barack with a donation of $2,300 today?
My attempts to decipher campaign contribution limits online has just left me confused; is there anyone who can say with certainty if I can legally donate more to Obama's Presidential campaign?
Thank you.
Updated 10/23/2008:
Thanks to everyone for your responses. I ended up emailing the campaign, as I figured they'd be able to tell me for certain, and I didn't want to potentially cause problems making a donation that they'd have to return. Here's what they sent back:
Please note that only U.S. citizens and lawfully-admitted permanent residents age 16 or older can donate to federal campaigns, and that Senator Obama does not accept contributions from corporations, PACs, children under the age of 16, or federal lobbyists. Please also note that an individual may donate up to $2,300 ($4600 for couples). You can donate in your own name only and you may only use personal funds. Also know that we appreciate reports of unauthorized solicitations and take them seriously.
I'm not actually convinced this means that I've hit the donation cap, but there's plenty of other good races to donate to, so I'll play the safe side and donate where I know I'm under the limits.
Thank you.
