This is the first election I am not canceling my Dad's vote for President. My Dad, rest his soul passed away in 2006, believing his permanent Republican Majority was going to rule this country for a thousand years. A quick note about my Dad, he didn't vote for Bush in 2000, Bush was too liberal, my Dad grabbed his pitchfork and voted for Rachel Maddow's odd partner, Pat Buchanan.
Having a Dad like that didn't make coming to terms with my sexuality easy. I was raised to believe that Adam and Eve was what God had in store for me, even when I looked over and saw how much dreamier Adam would be with Steve. There were a lot of things growing up I assumed about myself, and society I have drawn into question...
.... my Mom's politics was never one of them. I was raised in a conservative Catholic family. My Mom ever pro-life.... voted for Barack last night. I know this because she asked me to help her fill out her absentee ballot.
The shock of my Mom coming out of the closet as a Democrat is perhaps the greatest revelation I've had since my Dad's passing. But as I was filling in the ovals on her ballot... she would keep on saying, "It's the Democrats turn this time...". My Mom told me she hasn't voted in an election since before I was born (1974).
Back during the primaries, I registered as a Democrat. There was talk back in the spring of a redo in Michigan. I registered as a partisan because I cared about who the Party was going to nominate. Barack brought officially into the Democratic Party. Today I voted for Barack Obama. It's the Democrats turn this time.
This weekend I am going door to door for Change. Next weekend I am going door to door for Change. November 4th, I am taking the day off from work and going door to door for Change. Now is the time for Action. Now is the time to break their spirits and crush their souls. To arms!
