Yes, Virginia, you can vote early. There are polling places in numerous locations in the DC suburbs, and, I assume, throughout the state. My wife and I voted for Obama, Mark Warner, and Jim Moran last Saturday at a government building a mile from our house. We waited less than ten minutes. It felt great!
Virginia seems to be playing down its early voting, but its there. They are calling it "in-person absentee voting," but it is really early voting at a polling station on a voting machine, which will be counted and posted on election day. Polls are open weekdays until 8:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.
Anyone who commutes outside of their county or city of residence, or who has any other reason to believe that they will be busy on election day, is eligible to vote early. Here is the website for Fairfax County giving the addresses of the polling stations and eligibility information. I expect other counties and cities will have similar sites. All you need is photo ID or your voter registration card. You will need to fill out a short form checking a reason for voting "absentee." For most people, it will be "business," i.e. you have business on election day, such as going to your job.
