MacNN reports:
In an unusually political move, Apple has taken a stance on a ballot issue affecting its home state of California, according to an announcement. The company has declared itself publicly opposed to Proposition 8, a measure which would amend California's constitution to ban gay and lesbian marriages.
More below the fold
The article goes on to mention:
Aside from announcing its opposition, Apple has taken the further measure of donating $100,000 to No On 8, a political action group.
I'm pretty excited that Apple has chosen to make this stand, especially in light of the so-called "blackmail" letters sent out by the proponents of Proposition 8. I can't help but wonder, given Apple's history of supporting its GLBT employees, if it purposefully chose to make this donation as a statement to those who sent out that letter.
Update: Apple has published a brief statement on their Hot News page. I haven't found a full press release on the site yet.
Update 2: The original dKos diary that used the term "blackmail" letters is gone, but here's a link to the AP article about ProtectMarriage.com's threatening letters to businesses who donated in opposition to Prop 8. Gay-marriage-ban backers targeting opposition donors (San Diego Union-Tribune/AP)
