Multiple articles concerning early voting in Florida have touched upon the notion that the elderly voters were "begging for chairs" while waiting on long lines in the heat.
It occurred to me that, if the Obama campaign isn't doing something about this already, it could and it should! What's the point of piling a bunch of senior citizens into a van and driving them all the way to a polling place if they're only going to pass out from diabetic heat exhaustion before they get a chance to get their "I VOTED" sticker?
So although I have no money, no organizational skills and live in NYC (and don't drive or own a car), I thought I'd go through the trouble of at least introducing the concept of a Florida Chair Drive, where we somehow provide loads of foldable or stackable chairs (appropriately labeled as Obama Campaign Chairs) to elderly voters waiting and suffering in the queue.
Again, I have no means by which to magically make this happen.
First off, someone should get in touch with the Obama Campaign HQ in Florida. (I guess that should be me, and I'll do that after work if no one else has done it by then, but I can't call now.)
If something official isn't being done via the campaign, maybe it should... but, either way, it seems to me that our Obama voters down in Florida need to be supported (literally), and making it possible for them to wait 2-3 hours in a line when they otherwise would not have been able to, could help make all the difference!
After all, we don't want those elderly Florida voters to be so heat-stroked and addled that they vote for Buchanan again, do we?
So, please, add a comment below. Is it a dumb idea? Is it already happening, from what you've seen? Do you have a van or a chair business and live in Florida? Join in; maybe this can make a difference in some lives, and in some elections!
