I must admit, I am becoming increasingly wearied with folks on 'our' side (the liberal, pro-Obama side) making the argument that reason and faith are mutually exclusive.
Follow me below the fold for my first dKos diary. I first posted this yesterday as a comment on a diary (WalMart Republicans) that quickly scrolled out of view. I think it may be worth a diary of its own.
There is much more to Christianity than evangelical fundamentalism; the spectrum of both theological and political leanings among faithful Christian believers runs the gamut from far-left to far-right. People who are trying to interpret and live their faith in this confusing post-modern world see things differently and come to differing conclusions. I don't want to impugn the faith of others, just as I don't want them to impugn (or impinge upon) my own.
My mainstream protestant Christian beliefs lead me to a profound sense of social responsibility and compassion, to an identification with the poor and the marginalized in our society. I am drawn to political candidates whose views and policies I believe will best help bring about a nation and a world in which words prevail over weapons, in which violence and hatred have no place, in which everyone has enough and in which every person is treated with respect and finds justice and opportunity equally available to them.
Am I idealistic? Absolutely! But I have a faith that tells me about a Kingdom of Heaven in which the last will be first and in which everyone is loved and welcomed... and I am using my voice, my vote, my money, and my livelihood to do my part in bringing that Kingdom about.
End of sermon.
