I've been volunteering here in Sarasota, Florida for the Obama campaign for the last four weeks. I've done the phone calls, I've done the door to door, and lately I've been darting through the local grocery store parking lots talking to folks and handing out our early vote flyers. Since starting, I've gotten quite a good suntan, and have lost nearly five pounds. So, there are some extra benefits to working the ground effort for Obama.
Today I visited a Target/Publix shopping center in the mostly republican south end of Sarasota. As soon as I hopped out of my car, I sensed one of those "evil glances" from a McCain supporter. Having long since lost any common sense of fear for those who support McCain, I decided to approach her. Gently.
This lady was probably around 70 years old. Her burnished grey hair stood tall atop a scrunched up face. I was in trouble.
My first question to anyone who doesn't run away from me, or hide their head inside their shirt, is "Have you voted yet?" So, I asked the lady. I held my breath and waited for the onslaught.
"I'm so glad you're here!" she said in the middle of a giant sigh. She looked toward the ground and shook her head.
"Things are so messed up - we've got to get things changed. Thank God you all are out here!"
Wow! What a great way to start another day of convincing. My legs will hurt no longer.
