National eyes have turned to Wyoming, and to a theme Daily Kos readers will recognize when it comes to Gary Trauner:
CODY, Wyo. (AP) — In a conservative town in one of the country's most conservative states, the Democrat running for Vice President Dick Cheney's old House seat isn't having a hard time finding supporters.
"Oh, you have to win, you just have to," says an elderly woman who answers the door as Gary Trauner canvasses a tree-lined block in Cody. "Somebody's got to do something for this country."
Another neighbor raking leaves in his yard waves Trauner away as he approaches, saying he already has his vote. One man, Dave Warden, heard the Democrat was in the area and approaches him, asking to have his picture taken with the candidate. "We need some new blood, new ideas," Warden said.
It's that same front-porch mojo Gary took into the 2006 election, when he lost by just one vote per precinct. When people meet Gary, they love him. Trouble is, he can't meet all of them in person, and his wealthy Republican opponent just sunk $100,000 of her personal fortune into the race. The NRCC has gone in with $350,000.
That's because they're afraid of what we're trying to make happen: the embarrassment of a seat that's been held by Republicans since 1978--when Dick Cheney won it--being won by a Democrat.
We can help Gary get his message to all of Wyoming. Our goal is to get him to $120,000 on our Orange to Blue page. So far we've raised $21,000 almost $25,000 of the $70,000 we needed to meet that goal. That money is going to go to pay for ads in the Salt Lake market--the only way he can effectively reach southwest Wyoming.
Don't let up now. Reward one of the hardest working candidates we have and help us get Gary to Congress.
