Ok, so now we're (hopefully) getting rid of the last vestiges of Repuglican one-party rule, can we please stop using their talking points?
Dependence on foreign oil has left us beholden to unstable, in some case repugnant, regimes
Three reasons not to use this particular phrasing:
- Oil, once on the high seas, joins an open market being sold to refineries. There's no "beholdenness" per se, unless you're referring to OPEC, a cartel of oil producers.
- If you are referring to OPEC, I happen to think OPEC is a really good thing. It has stopped the U.S. from running over oil-producing countries rights and has been a mechanism for curbing U.S. expansionism, which is why the neocons so want to destroy it. No doubt it does have some "repugnant" member states, but:
- These "repugnant" regimes generally fall into two categories: a) those who the U.S. has backed and/or put into power in order to control the supply of oil, and b) those who are standing up to the U.S. in order to cut better deals for the exploitation of their resources for the development of their own peoples (though that hasn't been too successful).
Look, I'm all for ending the oil addition, for decentralizing power generation, for curbing our consumption of fossil fuels whether from foreign or domestic sources.
But do we have to echo Republican talking points in making our case for common sense?
