My goal, like that of everyone else here, is that the Democrats will sweep the elections throughout the country next week, and we will have not only the most qualified person as our President come January 20th, but a solid majority in both houses, strong enough to get this country turned around and headed into the right direction.
We need to end the occupation and strikes into countries that have not attacked and are not threatening to attack us. We need to practice trickle up economics rather than trickle down economics. We need to treat government as the protection of the people against the greed, ruthlessness, and cruelty of the powerful and regulate accordingly. We need to develop true respect for our Consitution and the rules it sets forth so clearly and unequivocably.
But I also have a dream that has nothing to do with such lofty goals. In fact, that dream has more than a little sense of revenge mixed in it. Of anger, outrage, frustration, and just outright desire for punishing evildoers. Even so,the result would still be lofty and could do, in my opinion, as much to help the American people as any of those other lofty goals I'm sure the Dems will work towards.
That dream is that every single fricking politician who went into the gutter during this election process, whether Democratic or Republican, would lose their bid for election. Not just lose it, but Be Wiped Out. Lose by margins so large, they'd never consider running again. Lose by margins so large, every future candidate would look at them and say - I don't Ever want to go there.
Can you imagine if McCain, Bachmann, Dole, and that whole crew of politicians who have chosen the lowest road in existence were to be tossed out on their ears, with no room for doubt of why they were tossed out, what the improvement in the level of discourse there would be for future elections?
These are all politicians who are afraid they can't win on the basis of their positions and/or their prior decisions. They're afraid people have looked at the platform they espouse and the actions they've taken and decided that is not what they want for the country. Knowing they hold opinions that are not the opinions of the majority of the country and have made the wrong decisions in the past, they have 3 choices. 1. Try to convince the people of why they are right and the people are wrong by pointing to the strengths of their position and the weakness of the others'; 2. Change their positions to comport with that of the majority; or 3. Change the subject and convince people to vote for them against the other based upon reasons that have nothing to do with reality.
They can't choose the first because they either don't believe it themselves or believe it against reality and so can't come up with any arguments likely to convince many to change their positions. They can't choose the second because of the unfortunate "flipflopping" charge that will be brought against them immediately.
And so they are left with the third one. And wow. Have we seen this election what the fear and panic of these candidates can create when they choose this option. Charges of being unamerican, unpatriotic, godless, not one of us, socialist. Charge after charge of guilt by association. Not just distortion, but outright lies. Gutter, gutter, gutter charges, that have absolutely nothing to do with where this country will be going in our future. That have absolutely nothing to do with the issues we will be facing and deciding.
I've dipped in my pocket as much as I can for Tinklenberg and Hagan and Obama, although I'm going to dip in a little farther this last day to try and tip them over just a little more. And I want to encourage everyone else to make that last effort, that last bit of sacrifice. Did you, like me, just win $25 in a drawing? Send it someone's way. Did you find a twenty dollar bill stuffed in a pocket you'd forgotten about? Send it someone's way. Have you been saving up for a new toy you could wait a few more months to get in order to help your country? Send it someone's way. And by someone I of course mean a Democrat who hasn't participated in the gutter politics we've seen. 'Course I don't know of any Democrats who have (which does say something about the two parties, doesn't it?), but if there are, I don't want to encourage them either. But let's do everything we can, not just to get the good guys elected, but to get them elected with huge margins. Not by 2% or 3%, but by 10%, 15%, even more would be even better.
Being of "that age" where the brain doesn't recall names so readily, I know there are many more Republicans than I've named who have engaged in the kind of politics I've discussed. Which Republicans do you think have been the most egregious and who are the Dems we should send our support to in order to ensure not only their loss but their humilation? Who are you going to be sending your last dollars of the election to?
