I suppose she wouldn't want the job, but I just watched the interview Rachel Maddow did with Barack Obama, and it made me think she'd be the best press secretary ever. I linked to the interview here.
In the interview, one can see something rarely evident on any station, in any media outlet anywhere: an intelligent and informed interviewer talking with an intelligent and informed candidate. Substance. Depth. Detail. It was an example of what the media ought to provide, and it makes obvious what we lack in its absence.
In particular, were Barack Obama afforded the opportunity to speak like this in widely-viewed situations, it's hard to believe that many people would remain skeptical. This man is a deep thinker and a rare blend of intelligence and pragmatism. In general, we see in Rachel Maddow what an intelligent press corps could provide the American people if it was similarly capable. And, of course, if the public demanded it. By comparison to what we most generally get, what passes for "journalism," this interview is champagne in a world of Sprite. How sad it is that Rachel Maddow is not the norm, that instead we have to settle for gotcha journalism, lazy journalism, ratings journalism. Celebrity journalism.
Which brings me to the original point: I wonder, if offered, if Rachel Maddow would consider accepting the job of press secretary to Barack Obama, were he to win. She'd have to give up her opinion-journalism. But she'd have a seat in the Oval Office, be a party to history, and with her intelligence and clarity she'd make the role into something it's rarely been.
Note to the Senator: give it some thought. She's the best there is.
