Six years ago, a Democratic congressman named Bob Filner was brave enough to call out George Bush on his Iraq War. Then, on C-SPAN, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson blasted Filner as "anti-American" and accused him of being filled with "hatred for America."
Wilson never apologized for his cowardice, of course, even though other Republicans told Filner that if Wilson had talked that kind of trash to them, they would have punched him in the face. According to the Washington Post, that comment did allow Filner to get off a great line:
"Listen, I was one of the first Freedom Riders in Mississippi in the early 1960s," Filner told us. "I've been
beaten up and thrown in jail by better people than Joe Wilson."
Wilson has been a disgrace ever since. He was Tom Delay's last best friend before the law frog-marched the Hammer off to Sugarland disgrace, and Wilson is one of Bush's all-time, most dependable votes. And now Wilson has an opponent who is very close to beating him, Rob Miller of SC-02. A lot will depend on the ground game since the moderate white Democratic vote coupled with the current surge in African-American vote can win this district. In fact, it's happened in other races in this district and one poll now has Obama head by four points in this area.
This is a race that matters and as the Obama wave breaks, ejecting Joe Wilson--the Michele Bachmann of South Carolina--is a real possibility. Miller issued a moving manifesto this morning at the Huffington Post:

explaining why he quit the Marines and decided to run for Congress. As a Marine, Miller knows how to take yonder hill, by why leave him to do it alone?
