Just in case you need a short break from the seriousness of the final four day push, let me indulge you with some sweets from my art room. Even though we are contractually obligated to keep our political opinions to ourselves, even my second graders cannot keep from talking about the election while they create. The other day I felt a sheepish tug on my sleeve and crouched down to eye level and heard a tiny face ask me...
If there were only two presidents ever, who would you vote for: George Washington or Barack Obama?
It was one time I could not hide my leanings. I voted Barack.
Even though we cannot officially do anything Halloween-related since at least 10% of the students are not allowed by their parents to celebrate the "evil" holiday...
Masquerade parties started 500 years ago in Italy, and they are safe for even the religious right!
I often find myself having to adjust to the moral imperatives of the wider world, but when it comes to Halloween I always find a way. Making "art that you wear on your face" allows kids who spend their entire childhood afraid of celebrating "the Devil's birthday" to get a bit of the joy that most of us grew up with. It is a tiny victory, but it is all mine. Sorry for the short personal diary, but I just wanted to give a treat to anyone who might dig such things before I paint myself from head to toe and head to South Beach for the freakiest night of the year.
Enjoy, and Happy Halloween!
