First North Dakota, now SOUTH Dakota!
Badlands Blue reports that the Cook Political Report has just moved South Dakota from leans McCain to Toss up. http://www.badlandsblue.com and http://www.cookpolitical.com
The Dakota red is fading like the paint on their old barns.
Even if they don't ultimately go Obama, coming this close is a sea change (for the amber waves of grain) in this area. A month ago I wondered if it was a waste of time voting in SD - president always goes Republican, Sen and House races both way ahead for the Dem incumbents, but with Initiative 11 also a lot closer than I could have hoped for, it's in play.
Like most people here who were born and raised in (or passed through) South Dakota, this is incredible. There are ignorant folks there and there is racism but SD is also the home of our families and we spent some formative years there so maybe this isn't as hard to believe as we think. Maybe the good guys who have always been there are finally voting their interests.
Or maybe McCain/Palin have pushed them over the edge so this is the only sane option. Even my grandmother, a lifelong republican has become fed up with Bush and his policies. And that is saying a lot.
If we are to be a United States of America again, we will have to welcome these (former?)red states back into the fold. This would make it a lot easier.
