The following is meant to be an example template for Election Night Live Blog diaries, as part of the Election Day Live Blogging Project.

Welcome to the Election 2008 Live Blogging Project.

Please do not recommend this diary!  Instead, please recommend the mothership diary instead.  Also, please do not post images or videos.

[Put important and/or breaking news up here (and maybe graphs)]

New Hampshire President Results

[Insert commentary and/or editgrid graphs under here]

If you so choose to not use the kos graphs, and instead wish to keep track of the numbers yourself (or want to update the values in a table yourself on top of having the graphs), the easiest way to do that is to use a table such as this:

<table cellpadding="3">
<td colspan="3"><strong>TN-07 - 23% reporting</strong></td>
<td>Marsha Blackburn (R)</td>
<td>Bill Morrison (D)</td>
Results as of 11/7/06 at 11:23 Central Time.

Be sure to include candidates of other parties if the candidates receive (or are expected to receive) 5% of the vote or more.

To create a table, copy this code into your diary:

TN-07 - 23% reporting
Marsha Blackburn (R)18,00018%
Bill Morrison (D)82,00082%

Also remember to add the Tag "Election Day Live Blogging" to the diary, as well as any race-specific or candidate-specific tags.  If you have your own idea of how to present race results, then that's fine.  This is merely presented as a template to use.

To get the code for the kos maps, go here, click what type of race you want and what state you want to view (as of now, the only 2008 races you can click down to the state level for are house races), click "Share Map" and copy the code and paste it into the diary.

You must add at least one tag to this diary before publishing it.

Add keywords that describe this diary. Separate multiple keywords with commas.
Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

Just posting it so I have an example to link to when doing my call for volunteer diaries for the Election Night Live Blogging project.

well, I guess that's an issue to ask kos about in regards to the charts.  I still have some things I'd like to bring up too (like why to all states show 55 Electoral Votes when you embed presidential results like this?  And why do the maps for House races not zoom in as much as the other maps.  This is more apparent on bigger states.) - Status of the Electoral College

add a comment to the effect of "no pictures or video" otherwise it'll choke off a lot of dial up users.

    diary link; or individual diaries?
Loading the graphics will takle forever on such a busy nite. I generally like the presentation though.

maybe two states (like if someone took the New Hampshire and Vermont races together, for example) in a single dairy. - Status of the Electoral College

      •  It's going to be a huge clog if we have diaries (1+ / 0-)
        Recommended by:

for each state or two state, isn't it, and if individual posters are updating results isn't it a duplication of effort from the main charts?

I suggest keeping the actual Live Blog diaries relatively free of graphics, and just let them be talk streams. We will have a central location to track the charts; I think we all have the capability to have two windows open at once on our computers?

on the posters updating results, which is why my suggestions is to just embed the graphs of the races that diary is talking about.

And we're probably looking at 50 to 60 diaries total - and remember they'll be posted over the course of probably 3 to 4 hours along with god knows how many other diaries.  I don't think getting clogged is going to be much of an issue.

          •  Hmm. Seems to me that the site is going to have (0+ / 0-)

the most traffic we have ever had. I'm hoping we streamline it more so that I don't have to hop from Live Blog to Live Blog to check on different states.

Won't we have a nice flow, anyway, with the time zones, so that our Live Blogging will simply scroll across the country?  Seems that the threads would fill with talk immediately, and need constant refreshing. I envisioned us doing it front page, like we do with debates?

Is your plan coordinated with what the Front Pagers are doing, or separate?

Has kos said where he's getting the data that will feed those graphs? AP, or something else?

Certainly having graphs that auto-update will take a lot of the work out of maintaining the state-level diaries.

    1.  Nice job!
    1.  Where you say:

To create a table, copy this code into your diary:

it still shows up as a table, not code to me.

As someone who is new to liveblogging and is going to be posting one of these, I do have questions:

    1.  Should all updates be marked Update: or is it clear that liveblogging diaries are constantly being updated, so that would just get cluttered?
    1.  Should I know something about reserving the first and second comments for responses of a certain type?

    •  geh! (0+ / 0-)

Maybe when I went back and edited it, it changed it back.  It was code to start with. sigh I'll go change it back.

Maybe if you update it I'd put the time of the update, but maybe that's it.

Most motherships usually reserve the first comment for transcripts (if it's a speech or hearing) and the 2nd comment for volunteers to create child diaries.  I don't really think we'll run into a problem of needing child diaries for the blogs about specific races.

If it gets to the point where someone needs to create a 2nd diary, then I guess you can just put out a call for a volunteer to create a 2nd diary in your diary. (I hope that made sense) - Status of the Electoral College
