Supporters of Alan Keyes, the wingnut blowhard who is on the ballot in California and other states as an independent candidate, are angry at Priests For Life national director Father Frank Pavone for implicitly endorsing John McCain instead of their idol. They're particularly upset that Father Pavone's pro-life voters guide compares John McCain favorably to Obama but neglects third party and independent candidates, especially anti-choice wingnuts like Keyes, whose extreme views put them at the outer limits of wingnuttery.
Supporters of Father Pavone counter that the lesser of two evils is better than the greater of two evils, and that a wasted vote for a third party candidate is a sin if it helps a pro-choice candidate get elected. Father Pavone himself does not deny he implicitly favors McCain, but claims he is nonpartisan. "Some people come to the conclusion that when I proclaim the demands of the moral law, I’m speaking like a Republican cheerleader," he says. "I don’t take that as a criticism of me, but as praise for the Republicans. But the reason my words are not partisan is that if the candidates and parties were to swap all their positions tomorrow, my message (and that of the Church) would be exactly the same as it is today." Which is like the Pope saying that if all Jews became Catholics he wouldn't be anti-semitic.
