Sometimes these right-wingers are so crazy you think they must be joking. Unfortunately, there is nothing funny about Peter Roskam’s views on women’s rights. I am not sure if he is representing Illinois’ 6th District or running as heir apparent to the late Jerry Falwell.
In a statement that should shock and appall even many pro-lifers, Roskam lumped together women who choose to terminate a pregnancy with rapists. Seriously.
In a interview, Roskam was challenged about his position on choice and when pushed "Roskam said people cannot be categorized by the way in which they were conceived and asked in the Pioneer Press interview why women can have abortions if rapists cannot be executed." What the f.ck??? It’s offensive, demeaning to women, and downright creepy. Unfortunately, it isn’t surprising.
This same mind has brought us the "Sanctity of Human Life Act", humorously depicted by the Morgenthaler campaign in this video:
Look, anyone who has followed Roskam’s career knows that he is anti-choice in all circumstances, making no exceptions for rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk. Since the majority of Americans are prochoice – including folks in the 6th District – that is a pretty unelectable position, which is why he’s spent much of his campaign trying to muddy the waters about his extreme stand.
He is even trying to fool 6th District voters with a website absurdly entitled "Obama Voters For Roskam". I cannot imagine what sort of person could support Barack Obama and find any common ground with someone as offensive and right-wing as Roskam.
With all the great races going in Illinois and around the country, this race has not gotten the attention it deserves. But as a recent Illinois political blog stated: "Local Republicans say that early voting is definitely scaring them and that freshman GOP Congressman Peter Roskam is slipping in the polls."
