Below is the text of a letter from a family member to try to convince the few members of my family who are Democrats why they should vote for McCain.
For the last year, there has been much passionate political discussion at family events, and there is no amount of logic or fact that can be used to persuade those in my family who vote Republican to change their minds. This incredible point of view shows why:
I know this will not change your mind and maybe even make you more sure of your choice in this election, this is the reason for my vote.
I am very depressed about the election.
I can't believe that people do not even question Obama's character, integrity and loyalties. They say it's dirty politics. The only reason Obama is not questioning McCain's character is because McCain's character, integrity and loyalty have all been investigated; there is nothing to question. Obama does not want to answer questions about his own character, integrity and loyalties.
We have a Liberal news media willing to jeopardize our nation’s security by reporting stories by "reliable" anonymous sources, but not willing to report documented evidence about a candidate’s character and integrity. To me that is extremely scary. It makes me wonder how far the media will go to influence this election.
A person who has questionable character, integrity and loyalties should not even be considered. Obama is an eloquent speaker and has charisma but those are some of the words that were also used to describe people like Saddam Hussein, Adolph Hitler and Charles Manson.
The future of our nation is at stake. He will be choosing the next Supreme Court Justices. I worry about what life will be like for my grandchildren if he is elected. The liberal way of dealing with problems is to make the wrong thing the right thing, (not by changing anything) simply by saying it is right, and then teaching it to our children in public schools. (Political correctness) Then our nation has to deal with the consequences: gay marriage, fatherless children, the breakdown of our society....... Public schools not even telling our children the fact that the safest most secure environment for children to grow up in is a home with a mother (role model) and a father (role model) who care about their welfare. Most children in Wisconsin do not grow up in that environment. If they don’t know that how can they strive for it in their lives?
UPDATE: Someone in comments made a good point that I haven't offered enough context to this diary. I received this email from my aunt this morning, and out of frustration and looming depression, trying to figure out "how did I come from this family? Why are my views so completely opposite?" I decided to get it off my mind, share it. Further, it solidified my decision to take vacation days Monday and Tuesday, to continue the canvassing work I did this weekend.
I appreciate the kind words of support below that have helped me cope with this insane point of view by someone who I otherwise love. I'm trying to decide if I'm ever going to spend holidays at my aunt's house, or visit her again. I just ... can't wrap my mind around this. I knew she was going to vote for McCain, but I had no idea how completely ignorant she and other members of my family are.
