"Dear Republican,
Like you, I was proud to be a Republican until the advent of Bush and the Neocons. My family have been active California Republicans since 1859, the year before Lincoln was elected."
So begins a letter by former GOP congressman Pete McCloskey to Republican voters in California's 46th CD.
Not only has McCloskey endorsed Rohrabacher's challenger, Debbie Cook, he's writing letters and campaigning on her behalf. He continues to deride Rohrabacher's being in the inner circle of Jack Abramoff, and his ridiculous stance on global climate change. He praises Cook for her leadership on energy issues and pragmatic approach to governing.
Rohrabacher has cause to worry: he openly admits that he's in trouble. Even libertarian OC Register blogger Steve Greenhut acknowledges this race is an "omen for the GOP nationwide"
People originally wrote this race off, thinking it was too big a gap to close. Now it's within reach. Greenhut says it perfectly:
the GOP needs to get its clock cleaned after years of straying from its limited-government principles, pandering to the culturally meddlesome religious right and allowing neoconservatives to drive foreign policy
