I want to remind US left-wingers that the whole World is watching you and that you are not fighting only for your country.
I'm Italian, I've never visited the United States, neither do I know anybody there, but this year I'm going to spend the whole night awake waiting for the victory of Obama and all the Democratic Party. From my European point of view the action will take place late: eastern Kentucky closes at midnight CET and Aleutian Islands at 7a.m. CET. You disappointed me four years ago, but two years ago you gave me a great night. I want to remind you that the whole World is watching the US elections, this year more than ever. For example, in previous years Italian TV-news programs have given virtually no coverage to the primaries, this year they have reported even the results of Guam Island.
Your victory is important also for Italy, where the situation is very grim for leftists. In the latest months the right wing has taken back the parliament, the local left parties are seen as sleazy and distant from their base and there is no hope to take the power back in a short time. There have been cases of racial violence against immigrants . The new government is considering segregationist politics and has begun cutting the expenses for the public school, university and research system.
The victory of a black President, who is going to push a progressive agenda (i.e. public health care) in the most important country of the World, will be a great sign of hope for us, too. It means that racism can be overcome. it means that you have realized that free market is not the solution for everything and our right-wing will be no longer able to tout privatizations by saying: "In America all is private and all works perfectly".
So I'm not going to sleep in such a great night and I guess that I'm not the only foreign leftist doing so. I reiterate: Please, Americans, do not disappoint us. I'd like to read some comment from other foreigners that are interested in the US elections. Sorry for my English.
