It's really strange to say this, but this is the second time this week where I have watched something on Huckabee's show that I think would be beneficial to see. The first was a discussion with Bill Maher on religion, and now a discussion on civics with Richard Dreyfuss.
Dreyfuss came on and off the bat said how nice it was to talk with a host that doesn't demonize him, and specifically said that O'Reilly called him a Pinhead for simply wanting 3 uninterrupted minutes to explain his position. The audience laughed at first(almost nervously it seemed), but then quickly shushed.
Dreyfuss explained how America is a country of ideas, and when we don't teach our youth those ideas then we have nothing that connects us. He didn't dumb anything down, and on many points I realized the usual Fox-viewer must be feeling uncomfortable. He repeatedly mentioned that human civilization has been around for at least twelve-thousand years, that soundbites are literally evil because they don't allow people to take the time to think out their opinions, and that the enlightenment was a good thing because it was a triumph of ideas and logic over faith and hope. He said that because decisions can be quickly made due to technology we need to seriously think before we are persuaded by those with agendas, referring to the post-911 mentality.
It was pretty powerful and I was simply amazed that this was on Huckabee, which is usually just a GOP infomercial. Maybe the era of anti-intellectualism is finally coming to an end.
