So I was listening to Neal Boortz on the way to work today - I know, I know, but in Atlanta there's not much liberal talk radio, so it's always entertaining to listen to the other side - and I caught him in the middle of a rant about voting around 11:30am. (No transcript or such - I was driving!)
He went on to talk about how there's no federal guarantee to the right to vote, using Bush v. Gore as his stalwart, and how we shouldn't allow ignorant people to vote. We have states to thank for our rights to vote, and that if Florida wanted to pick their electors using their state legislature then more power to them.
He went on to play a clip from some random voter, and used that as proof that in order to have an informed electorate, we should institute a voting test akin to the driving test to qualify to vote.
Democracy, by definition, is a government where the power is invested in the people. Not just those smart enough to like Neal Boortz. How many times have we heard the likes of "lots of people voting = bad for America?"
I don't know about you, but I think democracy is good for America. Let's prove Boortz wrong! Get out the vote folks! This one just pushed me over the inspiration line, and now I'll be volunteering tomorrow morning to GOTV for Obama and Martin down here in Georgia.
Do everything you can, whether it be formally volunteering for the campaign, getting your family and friends out to vote, or even just getting your facebook friends out and voting. GOTV. Let that be your mantra for the next 36 hours.
