The website has pretty much been down or has timed out since 8pm when the polls closed.  It's nearly impossible to see state returns, I've resorted to going to local news websites.

I was actually able to speak to a person by calling (916)657-2166 and the woman was incredibly rude and could've cared less that their site was having problems.

Good grief - I'm voting for whoever runs against Bowen in the Democratic primary.

I cannot believe all the negative comments I have received. And yes, it's a total buzz kill to Obama's amazing accomplishment today.

I am a CA resident who feels very strongly that Prop 4 (parental notification) and Prop 8 (denial of rights to those who want same sex marriages) are totally ridiculous and absurd.

I happen to think it's a reasonable expectation that I could go to my SoS site and view the results. I think SoS Bowen has done a great job fighting the e-voting machines that don't work. I also think, as a CA citizen who voted for her, that I have the right to criticize her and make not that the SoS site, her face to the online world is NOT up and functional on Election Day.

For some reason, I'm viewed as whining.... what the hell is wrong with you people?!? Is it wrong for me to have some expectations?!? Do you all live in some world of diminished expectations? Or you think that because you approve of someone on a particular issue that they are beyond reproach?!?

Please... i am glad that our elected officials have higher expectations for themselves. Otherwise, they'd be stuck in the pathetic world of minimal expectations.

My sincere hope, as I express in my original diary, is that Bowen will live up to this mess - take responsibility. And if she doesn't, as many Daily Kosers have expressed, then NO - SHE DOES NOT DESERVE MY VOTE AGAIN.

Seriously, I understand your fervor. I know you all have drunk some particular kool aid. I know you will fight to the finish no matter what. But hopefully some of you are reasonable, you expect MORE from your elected officials, and you don't just jump on someone because they don't agree with you 100%.

I expect more from out elected officials. I think it's reasonable to want my SoS to have an up an running website posting results on Election Day. I recognize SoS Bowen has done some really great things, but I don't think that gives her a free pass to not have the primary source for election results not available.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Do NOT do that. (12+ / 0-)

Bowen has had what can only be called a very hard time.  She's been pretty much the only one trying to get a paper trail for the state voting machines, force them to undergo proper testing, etc. etc.  That is FAR more important than whether the website stays up.

I wouldn't be surprised if the website had been attacked, since the SoS website in Ohio was.  If not, probably Bowen was simply too busy to supervise the underling actually responsible for the website (and to remind them to buy more internet service this week).  In which case the site probably went down due to TOO MUCH DEMAND.

    •  she should be embarrassed.... (0+ / 0-)

I voted for her, and I do know she's been out there fighting - special kudos for her for her fight against e-voting machines that just don't work.

But this should be a HUGE embarrassment to her office. I've always been able to go to the SoS site for election returns and don't recall the site ever being down - and for this long.

I'm particularly annoyed that the folks in "Elections" were so dismissive - I'm sure they've received a lot of calls about the site being down, but the woman who answered the phone was downright rude and dismissive. I hardly think that Secretary Bowen wants people like this woman representing her.

is NOT the most important thing the SoS has to do.

    Get a clue.

Something to kvetch about?  Sure.  But if the choice is someone competent and attentive to crap like Diebold machines--or some GOP tool who'll see that you get the Right's results pronto... I know which one's superior.

the fact of the matter is that we are a reality-based site.  and while opinions are nice and sometimes instructive, they sure don't pass the muster when it comes to having a substantive and constructive engagement that is all about realizing the goal of this community blog.

(hint -- the goal of the blog is not to attend to your own petulance and WATB pontifications, but rather to get democrats elected.  in case you forgot...).

LEAVE Bowen and the website along. Please.   Yes, this is my own personal opinion, however, I have been doing this job for a looong time.

We used to have machines that were ultimately decertified.  We used to have hanging chads.  Now we have Bowen trying to create a legit paper trail in the face of major (silcon valley) companies trying to foist major voting machines on our fair state.  Please let Bowen sort it out, she is on our side.

Heads can roll if the poll does not open at 7 am.

We had to cross reference the voter rolls with something (Bush mandate) so we cross referenced with the Post Office. If you ended up not on the voter rolls, you got a provisional ballot. Roll Bush's head if you had a legit voting problem (spare Bowen).  There were 8 forms of voter ID accepted for provisional ballots, including, get this, health club id.  What other state wants you to vote so badly?
I say give Bowen credit here for being on our side.

Paper trail, lots of acceptable voter ID - what's not to like? I say- kiss the lady's knees.

    •  i hope SoS Bowen doesn't have your low expections (0+ / 0-)

if she does - happy that she's doing better than those who proceeded her and nothing more - that is a really sad state of affairs...

Sorry, but I have higher expectations for her. I think she can do better, and I sincerely hope that she thinks she can do better.

are unretrievable and crash on low turnout primaries-- Now given that, Debra Bowen is one SOS (and former state legislator) that understands the needs and trends of the Web, etc.  I mean as a California assemblyperson she helped bring the California legislature online and eventually helped bring about a California database that easily recorded all campaign contributions/gifts, etc. a California politician receives.  She saw the problems of electronic voting machines and was a strong advocate for providing election protection to the state.

I'm willing to put up one election night where there were Web issues--I understand the criticism, in fact with her record, the expectations are all higher, but she doesn't control everything.  Perhaps she'll comment on her Facebook profile, but believe me I know her well enough that she's concerned.

  •  maybe now you might want to delete the diary? (1+ / 0-)

with all of your kvetching about not being able to access the SoS site, i expected to have at least a little bit of a problem accessing it.

    and guess what?

    i didn't.

the diary is predicated on your own quirky interaction by way of the tubes with a site that is quite accessible here, replete with poll data and results by county, by initiative etc.

perhaps the problem with the site was not on bowen's end?

so why not just delete this exercise in making a mountain out of absolutely nothing at all?
