There was a diary earlier today called "List of Mormon-Run Companies" which appears to have been deleted (for good reason) after being on the rec list.  We really should not be boycotting companies just because a Mormon (who may or may not be against Prop 8) owns or is part-owner of a company.  That would be discrimination at an extreme.  That would be as bad as if we were to campaign against Democratic Senatorial candidate Tom Udall in New Mexico (who I'm very glad won)--or if we were to campaign for Merkley in Oregon just because Smith is a Mormon (versus because Smith is a lousy Senator).  However, there's a different way to take action, if one chooses to go after the church...go after companies actually owned by the church itself.  More below...

Here's the list of Mormon-owned companies on Wikipedia.  This may not be complete, but several of these are well-known, especially Bonneville Broadcasting, which has radio stations in some big markets (including 100.3 the Sound in LA, which I can get in my car here in the northern part of San Diego).

Beneficial Financial Group
Bonneville International Corporation (owns a lot of radio stations--including 100.3 the Sound in LA!)
Deseret Book
Deseret Morning News
Hawaii Reserves
Temple Square Hospitality
Zions Securities

Here's the source...

http://en.wikipedia.org/...

Deseret Management Corporation is run by top officials in the Mormon church, including the First Presidency.

Again, if one must go after the church because of Prop 8, go directly to the source--don't harm LDS members themselves (who, again, may or may not be for Prop 8--and even if they are, they may not have made an effort to get Prop 8 passed)!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Some churches double as businesses--this is most certainly one of them.  But, that's no reason to go against members of the church.

Banks and insurance companies are commodity producers...it doesn't matter from whom you get your checking account or insurance policy.

This makes them very vulnerable to boycotts.

Recently, the Deseret people tried to shove a development of over 10,000 homes in a pristine area near the Econalatchee river basin. They were shut down by the citizens in the area last week. But reast assure they will be back and will try to push their myopic agenda. Watch these freepers!

p, targeting a handful of companies isn't realli going to do much.

While it may not be fair to relegate all Mormons into the same hole, as long as these sympathetic, open minded Mormons are members of the church and contributing money to it, they are indeed just as guilty, because they're feeding the beast attacking our rights!

I left the Catholic Church for the United Church of Christ, when its anti-gay bigotry got to be too much for me...a painful decision after having been raised in the Church all my life, but I believe I'm better for it.

Staying with a church that violates your principles is like any other abusive relationship. Have the courage to step away from it and find a better alternative! So yes, I think we should go after all Mormon-owned companies or any other company that supported this odious ballot!

That was the purpose behind the "Mormon-run Companies" list (my only regret is it did have outdated info, and I didn't want the list attracting negative attention in the time it would have taken to update it).  If they belong to the church, they're tithing 10% of their income to strip away our civil rights.  That's unacceptable.

with this: "While it may not be fair to relegate all Mormons into the same hole, as long as these sympathetic, open minded Mormons are members of the church and contributing money to it, they are indeed just as guilty, because they're feeding the beast attacking our rights!"

Being Mormon, for many of us, is a little like being Jewish.  Heritage, culture --in addition to religion -- are in play. You can't just walk away as easily as you're implying when family relationships and lifelong friendships are in the mix.

But Mormons can choose to speak-up (as many, many of them bravely have) or divert tithing funds elsewhere if actually leaving the Church is too drastic an option.

(BTW, I'm on the books with the LDS church -- and will remain there as an act of respect for my family -- but haven't been active for years.)

I have 6 generations of history as a Mormon that defies what they have become. It is time to be public about the hypocrisy...and my family will need to deal with it.

And for those of you who get mad at going after the Mormons - I worked at a Utah-based company run by Mormons and there was a list of companies that they would buy from, including hotels where you could stay.

The money from Mormon-owned businesses funds their agenda.  This is not equivalent to boycotting a store that is run by a jew. They have a deliberate, economic agenda that does not include non-Mormons.

This is a six year old list which
"Mormon Stock Index tries to measure the stock market performance of companies run by Mormon executives."

It has dell - which was run by Kevin Rollins until 2007.

Also, I don't understand the point of targeting an organization simply because it is run by or employs Mormons.  Would it be acceptable to do so if we swapped "Mormon" for "Jewish" or "Gay"?  No.

Feel free to boycott those organizations which donated to Yes on 8.

Sorry if individual Mormons get hurt in a boycott, but this is war. The Mormon church declared war on gays. Time to fight back. We can't afford to give money to the enemy.

Where do you think the church got the millions to run that campaign?  Through tithe, which is compulsory for all active church members.  So even if you're not in favor of Prop 8, if you pay tithe, you funded it and you're guilty.
