Go NC! From the text of an e-mail from Alison Griffin, WNC Regional director:
North Carolina was won for Barack Obama by just over 12,000 votes. Here in the Western Region, we were able to exceed our vote goal, playing THE major role I knew you all would be able to play.
On behalf of my staff of now 18 here in WNC – thank you all for your tireless commitment to the cause. Certainly our work is not over, as we now must all work to ensure that this country changes and this world becomes a better place. It certainly has in the last two years with the help of supporters like you, most of whom have never volunteered in such a capacity before.
Your work will forever be appreciated by me and my staff. We could not have done this without you.
Keep fighting the good fight here in beautiful WNC!
More below:
Of the entire state, one county in the western part, Buncombe county, played a huge role. You might remember that Obama visited Asheville (county seat of Buncombe county) in October. It paid off!
Buncombe went 51% for Bush in 2004, but flipped, going 57% for Obama in 2008 (he won by nearly 17,000 votes in Buncombe County)!!!
Of course, the work of all the democrats throughout the state was heavy, but I'm particularly proud of our region. Go NC!!!
This is a huge victory, symbolically, for Obama and America. Another southern state bites the dust for the Republicans!
Perhaps earbucket (whom I quote from the comments below) sums up the sentiments of many of us best when he says:
I visited Jesse Helms's grave yesterday evening. I stood there and drank my coffee, imagining the look on Jesse's face when Satan stuck his head in the door to let him know that not only had a female Democrat been elected to his Senate seat, but his state had gone for the first black president. Mmmmm.
Thank you all you NC democrats, independents, and crossover voters who made this dream a reality!
