The Obama campaign has shown a flair for symbolism, and a touching respect for historical resonance. The Inauguration ceremonies will be parsed to death by the media. They will be looking for evidence for the Change that the campaign was built upon. The Inauguration Ball will be a great opportunity to show them what they're looking for. I have a proposal. Let's call it the "New Orleans Presidential All Star Band". Here's how it would go.
One of the greatest shames of the last administration was New Orleans. The great city still struggles to rise again. In one stroke, the new administration could signal that times have truly changed. What they do is put together the greatest collection of New Orleans musicians ever, and have them play the Inauguration Ball. Think about it. Dr. John, Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., Fats Domino, The Neville Brothers, The Preservation Hall guys... all of the great ones, all on one stage. And they open the ball with "Such A Night".
The music of New Orleans is one of the greatest cultural gifts that America has given to the world. It is entirely unique, and it is the perfect musical score for the election we've just experienced. The joyous, uplifting sounds of traditional New Orleans Jazz would be a perfect harbinger for this rebirth of American optimism and hope.
And what a glorious way to show the nation that Change has come. In stead of some big name pop star, we see the great soul of New Orleans playing it's joyous music for their new President, a President who will help them rebuild their city... a city which is one of the great treasures of the nation.
Anybody know how to go about making this happen?
