What goes around comes around. You reap what you sow. I think you get the point. When I saw a collection of different news stories, they didn't have much in common except the fact that actions have consequences. In a testament to conservative thinking, I guess "personal responsibility" is something that's easier to talk about than to practice.
Our first moron of the week: Sheldon Adelson
Mr. Adelson, not long ago one of America's richest men, is famous for 2 things. He owns 2/3 of the stock in Las Vegas Sands Corp., and he was the main donor of Freedom's Watch, the ridiculous 501(c)(4) organization.
The Las Vegas Sands went public in December 2004, and over the next two years his net worth soared by $17.5 billion. That works out to almost $1 million an hour, weekends, holidays and nights included. "He got richer faster than anyone else in history."
Well...what goes up must come down. The bubble has burst, and LVSC's stock fell 33% Thursday and 11% Friday, raising fears of bankruptcy. Adelson has already lost billions this year and a sizable amount since Thursday. Sorry Sheldon, we aren't going to bail you out!
Next up: Linda Gosman, West Palm Beach, FL, resident and wife of health-care magnate Abe Gosman. Linda is accused of hiding substantial assets during the couple's bankruptcy.
Mr. Gosman was worth $500 million when he filed for Chapter 11 in 2001, but last year the filing was discharged. In 2005, the court found that Gosman had shifted assets to Linda, who was then hit with a $66 million judgment. While saying she turned over all assets, she kept on to artwork, furniture, and expensive jewelry.
The indictment also alleges that Gosman made a false statement on her 2004 application for a $1.14 million mortgage loan. Specifically, Gosman allegedly failed to disclose that she was a party to the ongoing litigation against her in her husband's bankruptcy.
She is also charged with failing to disclose the $66 million judgment in another mortgage application for a $350,000 refinancing on a Jupiter property.
Finally, the indictment alleges that money from overseas accounts was illegally deposited into her domestic accounts.
If convicted on all felony charges, Gosman would face a maximum jail sentence of 175 years.
Last up: Minnesota Vikings defensive star Jared Allen. Said Allen of Obama's win:
"There’s nothing I can do about it now. Our paychecks will be cut in half. It is what it is. McCain, I still love you. We still love you in Arizona. Obama, you better do what you promised because, well, the whole country’s watching."
First off, I don't see how raising the tax rate from 35 to 39 per cent would cut their checks in half, but then again he isn't a math guy. Jared Allen apparently has less to fear about Obama's taxes than losing his own money though.
The NFL fined five players Friday for on-field actions during last weekend's games, including Minnesota's Jared Allen $50,000 for two below-the-knee hits on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub.
