It's not about Iraq. Though Joe's support for the Iraq war has been egregious, a lot of other Democrats held similar positions, at least at the outset. (See Clinton, H. - Iraq kept me from voting for her in the primary, but I would have voted for her had she been the nominee.)
It's not about 2006. Though we beat him in the primaries, and he won reelection by inventing a party and pandering to the rudderless Republicans, hey, politics ain't beanbag. He saw an opportunity and the voters of my state gave it to him. Shame on us.
It's not even about 2008. Of course his behavior in the last election was beyond the beyond. But that's who Joe is - and that's because it's about...
Alberto Gonzalez.
Let me explain...
Joe Lieberman voted to confirm Alberto Gonzalez as Attorney General. He did this even though it was already known that Gonzalez had been a key player in approving torture. He did this even though the Republicans had a majority in the Senate at the time, and confirmation was assured regardless of his vote. He did this even though it was fully evident that Gonzalez had absolutely no respect for the laws of the United States that he was being hired to enforce. He did this even though it was clear that Gonzalez was absolutely unfit to run the Justice Department.
When Joe voted to confirm Gonzalez, he took my voice as a Connecticut voter and used it to endorse torture. He took the powers we granted him through the constitutional process and used them to undermine the constitution and the principles of the United States. He implicated us in some of the most un-American acts that have been perpetrated in our name in decades, and he set the stage for the further disembowelment of American justice.
His vote for Gonzalez was his real kiss on the lips for George W. Bush and all that the Bush administration stands for.
The day Lieberman voted for Alberto Gonzalez was the day he abandoned the people of Connecticut. That was the day he left the Democratic party and became the demagogue at the head of Lieberman for Lieberman. That was the day, arguably, that he set in motion his primary defeat to Ned Lamont. And it was certainly the day he stepped beyond this Connecticut voter's ability to ever forgive him.
Yes, Joe betrayed us by supporting John McCain - but his betrayal began on February 3, 2005, when he voted against all that America stands for.
For his sake, I hope G-d can forgive his soul. I cannot.
