Yesterday I wrote a diary about Abe, a beautiful black cat that miraculously survived thirty hours under a scorched coffee table in a destroyed apartment complex in Anaheim Hills, California.
Abe's Dads, Eric and James had been out of town when the wildfires roared through their home and sadly watched the destruction from a hotel TV. Their loss is profound and their other cat Adam is presumed lost, but Abe, he's the one thing they have left and he's been struggling to survive.
So, here is the update on Abe directly from his Dads:
11/21/2008 8:25a: The vet just called me. He was able to some x-rays and blood work from Abe. He said that Abe seems to be doing better today as far as his breathing is concerned, which was confirmed by the x-rays. Abe's chest looks a lot better today, some of the fluid buildup has been reduced, so hopefully things will start to improve on that front. But the new concerns are the kidney levels and some blood toxins. The doc is concerned with kidney failure. So he is going to up Abe's IV fluid, add some potassium, take him off a couple of the meds, add an anti-vomitting, and hopefully get some food to stay down. The increased IV is to try to flush the kidneys and get them back down to safe levels.
11/20/2008 10:35p: James and Mom went over to see Abe. He was pretty tired. He spiked another fever, but it quickly broke. I guess he threw up the food from earlier. Doctor still has not taken any x-rays or blood because of the stress.
11/20/2008 1:00p: Mom went over to try to get Abe some food. She managed to get him to take 3 syringes. He was no worse, but no better.
Pray for Abe
Abe has a chance to pull through but Eric and James have lost everything and medical care for a very ill cat is not inexpensive. I'm hoping if you are able to help, you will.
If you do not use paypal you may contact the Vet's office directly by calling Yorba Regional Animal Hospital at 714-921-8700. They will take credit cards over the phone or you may ask to send a check to be applied to Abe's care.
Please help these fellow Kossacks by helping save their cat. The last thing they need is to worry about how to pay for Abe's care, they've just lost everything.
Some of you are as concerned as I am, we just can't stop thinking of Abe. Thank you so much for your kind words. Eric left a note in yesterday's diary:
OMG Thank you to everyone
Hi this is Eric, one of Abe's dads. I am sitting in my cube at work crying with the generosity we have received. I am humbled and beyond grateful. Words cannot express how I am feeling. Adam and Abe were our everything and losing both would be the most difficult thing I will have had to endure. I just cannot express my gratitude and humility to Heather as well as everyone else here at dKos.
While it by no means says how I am feeling, Thank you!
With love,
Eric
