OTTAWA — The three federal opposition parties are negotiating to take down the Conservative government, saying Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's fiscal update provided nothing in the way of stimulus for Canada's flagging economy.
NDP sources said party veteran Ed Broadbent held discussions Thursday with former Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien about how a coalition between their two parties could work.
This is a situation "the Tories have brought on themselves with their economic statement," Mr. Broadbent told CTV News on Friday morning. "I heard business groups this morning, they are unhappy with it. All the opposition parties are unhappy with it. So there is no question that serious discussions are going on."
By noon, however, there were indications the federal Tories had begun looking for ways to avoid a showdown.
Yesterday, Harper unveiled its fiscal update, and crossed the line by taking away the 1.75 subsidy/vote subsidy for federal parties. The Opposition parties also are angry there is no economic stimulus package, and the government is looking at a fire sale of Crown assets. The vote will take place on Monday.
There is lots of drama, and should be a historic day on Monday. So if you are bored by the lack of politics right now in the US, look to Canada, it is getting very interesting.
UPDATE: Harper decides to postpone the Confidence motion until December 8th. In other words, no vote Monday.
The Globe and Mail got their hands on the talking points email for Conservatives to use for letters to the editor, talk radio, and other media. The point is that a Government made up of Separatists, Socialists, and Liberals will destroy Canada and is just a desperate way to get power without being elected by the people. The media smells Harper's bluff with the postponing of the vote. Harper lost some political capital with the voters, Parliament and even the Corporate media. Regardless of what happens in the next week, this is a big win for the Opposition and a big fail on Harper's record.
