A week before the election, I was invited to a dinner. At the dinner was a very rich man and a big time political donor. Of course, when we started chatting, it took seconds before we wandered into politics-land.
I had known ahead of time that this person was a big time Hillary fan. He had given max. So I really looked forward to our conversation.
Unfortunately, at every mention of Obama from the room, this guy would spit out one line:
"OH ALL THE PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE TAKEN BY THIS OBAMA'S STYLE"
It does not end there...
The man could not go two sentences without dropping the precise amount of money he has donated. Although a Dem, he made sure to point out that he plays it safe, that he is good friends with McCain...all of which I do not doubt. He went on to say that he will be meeting Pelosi in a few days. Oh, and also that he would be voting for McCain.
So what is the problem? Well, Mr. Dem-for-McCain was still happy and content even though his candidate lost in the primaries and his candidate for the general was almost guaranteed a loss. Why was he happy then?
As he told me, apparently, being a big donor and a longtime Dem, he was hoping to get an ambassadorship under Obama. He made it seem like it was a done deal. He simply had to drop in a few names of countries he preferred.
I only post this having just read about Obama giving the pink slip to the Bush ambassadors. Unfortunately, I could only remember this man...who looked forward to getting an ambassadorship under our President-elect, yet could bash him all day and night.
So yeah, apparently, money does buy you ambassadorship. Democrat or Republican.
Is this how shit really works in Washington DC? Totally rhetorical. Though I hope our Prez-elect Obama shocks morons like this dude and keeps them away from him.
