By far my favorite show on the left-leaning news network, MSNBC, Lockup never fails to disappoint!
Is there anything more fascinating on television? Where else do we get to see the full range of different prisons and prisoners that Lockup presents to us on a weekly basis? It’s downright amazing to see how inmates in SuperMax go about their daily lives. It’s even more interesting seeing how correctional officers deal with these inmates.
If you thought racism played a role in how many votes Obama got in November, can you believe how much of a role it plays in a maximum security prison? Men with swastikas tattoooed on every inch of their body. Whites hating the blacks. Blacks hating the hispanics. Hispanics hating the whites. And all of them hate the guards, who have some of the toughest jobs in the country.
As they venture away from the SuperMax prisons though, we get to see the less dangerous inmates, with stories more sad than disgusting. We get to see how these inmates pass the time. Some have TVs, others build their own electric guitars. We get to see how they shop at the commissary, how they make pruno (prison wine), and how they get tattooed while behind bars.
This is about the most up-close and personal view we get on prison life, and MSNBC is doing us a great service by filming these documentaries. All I ask is that they start producing more new episodes! Who’s with me?
