The Secretary of Interior nominee is probably up next.
The two leading candidates are MILES apart.
One the left, you have Raul Grijava who wrote a pages-long report entitled "The Bush Administration Assaults on our Public Lands". Grijava, an Arizona congressman, is supported by 100+ environmental groups. He's the perfect green candidate, doing everything in his power to stop Bush's destruction of our environment.
On the right, you have blue dog congressman, Mike Thompson, who voted for Bush's deceptive and destructive "Healthy Forests Initiative", who voted against roadless areas in Alaska's Tongass Rainforest, who voted against fish/wildlife funding, and on and on. Not only that, but he's "Legislator of the Year" for the extremist Safari Club International (lots of money from them too).
But politics is politics. And so it's perhaps not surprising that Nancy Pelosi is pushing hard for Thompson (who also endorsed Clinton btw).
In fact, she's doing everything she can for her Mike Thompson, one of the Pelosi coterie and one of her lietenants. Indeed, as the Tucson Citizen notes TODAY:
U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva should tell House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to pound salt.
She just offered him a prestigious position on the House Ways and Means Committee. But if he were to accept it, Rep. Mike Thompson – Pelosi’s fellow California Democrat – could move a step up in the contest for Interior secretary.
That must not happen.
You can many of Thompson's anti-environment votes here and here.
And a good summary from the Humane Society:
[Mike Thompson] sided with the National Rifle Association and other extreme hunting groups when it came to the trophy hunting of threatened polar bears and the use of pizza and jelly doughnuts as bait to lure bears to hunters on federal lands.
