Beware of conservatives using an Alan Garcia victory as proof of the end of the leftward trend in Latin American politics.
Garcia is a Social-Democrat who sought to nationalize all banks during his presidency in the 80's.
The final polls in Peru show Ollanta Humala closing in on Garcia. Garcia now leads with 52 percent of the vote and Humala 48% (University of Lima), while a CPI poll gave Garcia 53.8 percent and Humala 46.2 percent.
Humala has steadily gained ground on Garcia in the last few weeks, due to undetermined causes, and it is said by a leading pollster in Peru (APOYO Opinion) that the undecided vote is likely to favor Humala.
Most right-wing sympathizers of Lourdes Flores, who was eliminated on the 1st round, are said to have taken Garcia's side.
Let the best man win.
