Retiring Republicans

Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 08:07:35 PM PDT

This is a list of House seats that are open due to retirement, promotion or death, or else due to an incumbent losing a primary challenge. For each I am tracking the Democrats who have stepped up to take the seats, as well as links to their FEC filings and ActBlue contribution page.

This is my first diary, and I hope to keep updating it as additional candidates and information come along. If you have any suggestions or additional information, please pass them along and I'll update it.

I originally grabbed this table from a comment posted by Crisitunity on mcjoan's diary AZ-03: And then there were 29, and modified it. This page has also benefited from suggestions by wuod kwatch and AdmiralNaismith. Thanks!

Note that ActBlue's FAQ states that processing fees are 3.75% of your contribution, which is explained in more detail here. Note that I have not double-checked the contribution links, so please double-check before making a contribution.

  •  GREAT SUMMARY (3+ / 0-)

6 Dem seats are open due to various reasons including the late Lantos's seat in Cali.

    •  Yes, I will add them soon. Maybe later tonight :) (4+ / 0-)

        •  No one's announced for Darlene Hooley's seat yet (0+ / 0-)

but conjecture here in Oregon is that she waited this long to make it harder for some other Dem to explore who'd back them, thus giving her Chief Of Staff a better shot at it.

Overall, her motive is fairly good.  If she quits now, it's definitely a good year for a Dem to be running in a swing district and if she waits until 2010 as she originally planned, who knows how that race would shape up.

I'm just not thrilled with her gaming the system for her CoS.

    •  Fully half of those 6 are going for the senate. (0+ / 0-)

At least two of them with excellent chances of winning, too - the Udall cousins - and thus improving the Democratic majority.  Thus rendering Lieberman largely irrelevant - YAY!  Maine might be tougher.  Only two flat-out retirements, since Lantos died in office.

      •  Absolutely! Thanks for the comment, and since... (0+ / 0-)

you're from the Land of Enchantment and a Benny Shendo supporter, I hope you'll update me from time to time as this race goes on. I'm keeping this diary updated so that as these races mature, I can hopefully give suggestions for where people might like to contribute their money...

BTW, when will we know who the Democratic candidate is going to be?

        Thanks again for the comment!

        •  Primary June 3 or 6 or whenever (0+ / 0-)

The third is a Tuesday, so it must be then.  Today is the deadline for getting petitions in to the party.  Then there's state convention March 15.  The ones who pass the petition requirements will be voted on there.  Those who get 20% of the vote then will get a place on the primary ballot.  So, we will know in June.

I collected some petition signatures for Shendo.  Was thinking about trying to be a delegate for him at the state convention (via a County Convention on February 23rd).  But I'm behind on a lot of other stuff, so might leave that to others.  Just cast a vote for someone else to support Shendo at the County Convention, and save myself the trip on March 15.

So, there you have it.  No separate provision for gettin on the ballot by straight petition.  Hypothetically, if no one makes the threshhold at the party's state convention, there would be no Dem to vote for in the June primary!

          Yikes!

In the top ten contests, six frontrunners for the Democratic nominations are women: Bonoff, Halvorson, Stender, Kilroy, Byrne, and Kirkpatrick.

  •  Add one more Dem for NM-01 (0+ / 0-)

Rebecca Vigil-Giron, formerly Secretary of State, and very cozy with the electronic voting machine companies.  (In case you can't tell, I'm supporting a different candidate in that race - Martin Heinrich.)

    •  Add Rebecca Vigil-Giron...thanks... (0+ / 0-)

Couldn't find a website and she's not on ActBlue yet, I'll add links later. Keep me honest on this race too.

Also, knowing very little so far about this race, and living 3000 miles away...I have to go with Michelle Lujan Grisham--she's just way too cute not to. ;)

Seriously, I'm completely neutral. Keep me posted. :)
