Open "I Voted" Thread from MD, DC, and VA

Good morning all.  I thought this would be a great opportunity to hear some stories from the field.  If you happen to live in MD, DC, or VA, we'd all love to hear your voting stories, so please share!

As for me, I'm not technically a Potomac-Primary voter anymore (I grew up in the MD suburbs of D.C., but have long since lived in NYC), my parents are still there and dropped a bomb on me this morning: after months of being totally pro-Hillary, they actually voted for Obama!!  Why?  Because they have bought the arguments that he has a better chance to beat the Republicans in the fall.  Now, electability is often a fool's game, but hey, if that's their rationale, I'll take it.

How about you?  Your stories?  I'd love for as many people to share as possible, so here's a blatant plea for recommendation!  :)  Now, the floor is yours:

  •  Walked into my polling place at 8:30

    No lines. Took me all of 2 minutes. Voted for Barack 8 times. By 8 times I mean Barcks and the 4 women delegates who support Barack and the three men who had Barack by their name. Can't wait to get home and watch the returns tonight.

      ...except I missed one of the men's delegates for Obama, so I ended up choosing one for Edwards.

      Since I originally would have voted for Edwards, that didn't bother me a bit.

      You have to vote multiple times, for the candidate AND for his delegates?  Can you split your vote up?

      Just curious...in MO, you vote for your candidate by filling in one circle, and that's it.

        •  OK, so what would the net effect of that be?

          Would it essentially be a vote for Clinton then?  A split of some kind?   What if someone voted only for the candidate but not for any delegates? I just don't get the point--I don't mean to sound dense, it just seems strange and pretty high-maintenance.

          •  My understanding is...

            ... it means you're voting for who gets sent to the Convention, but I don't know the exact reason why it's split up like it is.  I would assume that in most cases the delegates would vote for who wins the vote, but I guess they could play turncoat if they wanted to.

            •  This provision exists...

              ...there are more candidates for delegate than can be allocated (Campaigns will sometimes allow this as a way of encouraging more volunteers to do grunt work like collecting petition signatures).  In NYC, its not unknown for seperate political organizations supporting the same candidate to push entire slates of competing delegates.  

              The process is that once the Presidential candidate votes are tallied and the delegate allocations are made, delegates from that candidate's slates are picked in the order of THEIR vote counts.

    My Dad was the last holdout for Clinton, but he just told me that he was going to vote for Obama too!!!! He said that what convinced him is that Clinton would probably lose against McCain.

    but I voted in the poll anyway, as I don't see myself changing my mind unless I get to the wine store tonight and I am told that all Chianti is free from now on on behalf of Hilary Clinton.

    And even then I think I would just write her a nice thank you card after I cast my Obama vote.

  I took my 8 year old son with me this morning.   I arrived at 6:10am and they was a nice line.  I was 26th to vote.   This precinct favors republicans, but from what I could hear, most people were voting dem today.

  I also signed a petition to get Mark Warner on the ballot.

              to get Dean on the primary ballot.  I think it may be less for the Senate, but even if you're running uncontested you have to petition.

    Technically my son voted, I just supervised!

    We saw him Sunday at Alexandria and my son was thrilled to see him in person.

    The boy at the end was the son of one of the last questioners who wanted Obama to convince her to vote for him instead of Hillary.  There was an email yesterday about this from David Plouffe.

        I used my large lens for this, canon 100-400L.  It's a monster but allows great closeups.  I probably should have gotten up so I could get a picture of him with the change banner behind him.

        I had this lens with me when I saw Gore speak in DC on his last book tour and I guess I was mistaken for the press with the large lens and I was able to get some great close up shots of him.

        I forgot to mention I saw Richard Wolffe there with his wife and 3 young kids.   They were sitting on the floor area about 20 feet away from me.  

        They walked past me on the way out and I talked to him for a minute.   My son got a kick out of seeing him on TV last night on Countdown after meeting him in person.

    Lesser known candidates trying to get ballot access will often have their petition gathers tell people that they're gathering names for a better known candidate then switch the papers at the last minute.

•  I voted Obama in Prince William County, VA

  Went to the wrong polling place at first - it had changed between November and today, and apparently I didn't get the new voter card.  At 6:15 am I was voter 31.  Based on the number of Democratic and Republican ballot cards at the check-in table, I would say about 3/4 of the votes were on the Democratic side.

  There was absolutely no line and perhaps I saw 5-10 voters in my 5 minutes there. I voted at 7:30AM, which should have been a popular time for pre-work voters. Not sure if this was a random blip or if this very diverse area of MD will only have a modest voter turnout.

      in my district in Arlington.  Probably a thirty-person line at 8:00 a.m. that was constantly replenishing.  First time in years I've had to wait in line.

        This is my first time voting in MD so perhaps MD has set up more voter locations and has a more efficient process than VA. There were at least 8 volunteers at the site.

        Since people seem to be interested, I didn't see any campaign supporters outside, but an observer for one of the campaigns showed up as I was leaving.

    •  I voted absentee on Saturday...

      ...cause I moved from Silver Spring to Baltimore a few weeks ago and didn't have time to change my registration yet. I voted in Rockville and there were lots of people voting absentee, so that might explain some of the seemingly lite turnout in some places.

      Some voters may wait until later regardless of the forecast.  Turnout at my polling place was heavy.  Though I experienced no real line at 8:30 (two people came in behind me), I was the 169th voter.  Usually when I vote, I'm somewhere in the first hundred.

    the turnout was steady, there were 3 or 4 people at the machines and about 8-10 in line when I left. It moved pretty steadily.

  •  I voted early in NJ

    and despite record voter turnout the rest of the day, I was able to breeze right in, around 7:15 am, and vote.

    I would think the majority of voters go after work, but that's just my experience from working polls in VA (for Kerry), VT (for Sanders) and NJ (for Gore) through the years.

    FWIW, the weather is not THAT bad in the MD/VA/DC area. I know an inch of snow sends people screaming to the stores for TP and milk, but unless everything ices up and it sleets heavily, I'm not sure that this would really mess up turnout that much.

      In NC, you can't find milk, a loaf of bread, or a carton of eggs before a winter storm. A friend of mine says this is because people believe that "French toast will save us all." ;)

      Of course, this hardly ever happens anyway.

      Speaking for myself, I always vote after work. Most people I know seem to do the same.

    Voted in SS, MD at 8:45am and found the polling place pretty much empty.  There were more people arriving when I left, but not the turnout that other people have reported in other places.

  I posted this in another diary earlier before I saw this one:

  I've lived in Virginia Hills since 2002. In that time, it has gone from being moderate to slightly-left leaning in most races to heavily left-leaning in 2006 (Webb won 60/40). A generally older-skewing area, but with more recent home purchases tending to be hispanic.

  There were two people in line when I arrived at my polling place this morning at 9am, which is slightly lighter than I have experienced in the past. I don't have the 2004 primary numbers to compare to, but I can say that I was the 89th person to take a Dem ballot, and they had only handed out 18 Republican ballots so far.

  Posted this in another thread too, but at 7am near Huntington Metro there was no line.  The cards they'd collected from previous voters (which you get when you sign in to vote) looked about three dozen deep.  The stack was primarily (80% or better) blue, with a thin slice of red.

  in Alexandria, at the Mount Vernon Rec Center.  Heavy turnout--waited about 20 minutes to get a ballot.  About 50 people in front of me.  Only volunteer outside was an Obama supporter.   Ballot selection seemed to be running about 80-20 Democratic.

  There was a line at 7:05.  I had to wait about 10 minutes to vote.  The only poll workers were for Obama.  I voted for Obama unenthusiastically.

      for quite awhile having a last minute urge to vote for Edwards and all his delagates.  Then, I sadly concluded what is the point and voted for Obama and his people, recognizing names of party hacks as his delegates.

      I did the same thing myself.  What's nice about caucusing is being able to vote in two rounds, so first I stood for Edwards, then I walked over to the Obama camp for the second round.

      Many Obama supporters applauded my Edwards vote in the first round, so I knew I would be in good company for the second round, and they made me feel very welcome.  They also devoured my oatmeal raisin cookies.

    The candidate I was actually excited about has dropped out of the race, but (I was surprised to see this morning) still appeared on the ballot.  

    I hesitated maybe five seconds wondering whether it was worth a protest vote, but finally decided to do what I could to affect the current state of the race by casting a vote for the candidate I am, er, least unenthusiastic about.

    voted around 7:15. Not many people, between 10 -20 voters, no lines. One gentleman outside the plling place for Obama. It's very cold but, I think it will be steady.

  It took about 40 minutes from start to finish to vote.  I was #140 something.  Long lines and a really good turnout.

  Some TV crew was there, but I didn't see who they were with.

    I cast my vote at roughly the same time, #77 at my polling station. When my wife, kids and I (it's a family affair) arrived, we had to wait behind only three or four folks.

    If volunteer activity and yard signs are a good indicator, Obama will win the most Democratic of VA counties comfortably.

•  Alexandria, north old town (fire station)

  At 7:40 there were about 200 Dem voters up to that point, maybe 50 GOP.  That split isn't unusual for this precinct but the turnout sure is.  Line snaking out the door.  No read on who people were supporting, but everyone sure was happy and eager.  Table of friendly Obama vols outside, no one from any other campaign.

  this morning, but we had a half-hour wait this morning in Bowie, MD, which is longer than we've had before (caveat: we normally vote at lunchtime, but wanted to beat the bad weather today). Got in line at 7:20 and were out at 7:50. Good steady stream of people coming in the whole time.

  The only signs I have seen anywhere have been for Obama...at the polling place, in my neighborhood, etc. Got no phone calls from anybody this time, and no flyers.

  Oh yeah--my husband and I both voted for Obama.

  I live in East Tennessee now and my vote for Obama went for naught. He didn't even contest this state and Hillary ran up votes among blue dog racist Democrats in rural counties where they think Obama is a Muslim.

  I grew up in NoVa (Vienna/Great Falls) and loved politics as a child. Local news is national news there. I don't miss NOVA all that much but today I do. Go Obama!

    I couldn't convince my TN parents to join me, tho. They voted for Clinton - my dad's theory being that he expects Obama to win, so he wanted to say he voted for both an woman and an African American in an election. Doh!

    Obama won 28 delegates in TN to Hillary's 40, for a net gain of 12 in the Clinton column.

    Had good folks like you not fought the good fight against tough odds, Clinton would've netted many more delegates from TN.  Obama only won Super Tuesay by 9 delegates, so if the TN split had been 45-23 instead of 40-28 the media narrative would've been "Clinton wins Super Tuesday." with the ensuing momentum going to her.

    So pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

    The margin of victory for HRC was held to 54-41 in our state Elrod. Polls before that had her up anywhere from 25-30 points. So, the margin of victory was not as large as expected, and if I am reading the delegates assigned correctly, she came out of TN only +9 or +10. So, really, be proud of what got done in TN, a state that she was a heavy favorite in.

    I also take solace because I live in Shelby County (memphis) and it was 70% for Obama here.

    I heard that some polling stations in the Memphis area (Shelby county) were closed early because of the tornadoes showing up in the late afternoon last week. Had it not been for those early closings, Obama would have polled a little higher in TN.

    As for the Fall, I think that Obama stands a little better chance than Clinton in TN, but McCain has to be considered the favorite at this time. Harold Ford almost (48%) pulled off a Senate upset win in 2006, and it took a racist ad against him late in the campaign to assure his defeat. So TN is not knee-jerk anti-black. At a minimum, Democrats in TN could push the state to be competitive, forcing McCain to spend resources here that he won't be able to spend elsewhere.
