NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's new top dog was clearly the crowd favorite, and drew a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden when he was picked.

A shocker in the show world, where wire fox terriers usually wobble off with the prize ribbon. Sort of like the boy-next-door becoming president — that's how it would be to see a baying, barking backyard pet sip from the silver bowl.

Westminster has presented its best in show award 100 times. Not only has a beagle never won, none had even won the hound group and reached the final ring of seven since 1939 before Uno.

Almost 3, and prompted by pork loin treats, Uno was guaranteed to see tough competition at a sold-out Madison Square Garden before the champion was picked shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday.

A standard poodle, a top-winning Sealyham terrier and Australian shepherd earned spots along with Uno on Monday night.

With a wagging, white-tipped tail and pleading, golden-brown eyes, Uno certainly looked like the picture of man's best friend.

( What better way to understand a person than sniffing their butt? We might have avoided Harry Reid as senate majority leader that way.)

      Our golden retriever-chow mix is also a shedding machine with her shoulder length hair, but trimmed up with short hair like a beagle there's no shedding problem. Every two months in for her bath and trim.

      Plus, back scratches and tummy rubs take on a whole enjoyable new meaning for our sweetie-pie without all that hair getting in the way.

      We don't recommend the trim job if you keep your dog outside exposed to the elements. But if your dog sleeps in the house with you, curled up by your bedside at night, then regular short haircuts are a blessing for all concerned.

  I was pulling for the Aussie, and was just thrilled that the rough collie from Sylvan Argent kennels got 4th in the herding group.  I own a standard poodle, but still pull for the memory of my sweet collie since they don't place as often.

  I thought the dogs this year were exceptionally good--have been all year--akita, visla, weimeraner, chin, bull mastiff, Bernese mt., German shepherd--on and on.

  I don't know anybody can have only ONE beagle....should come in small groups.

  As for Obama...I read someplace that his daughters are hoping to leverage his run for the Presidency into getting a dog. The PR expert in me has been trying to think what would be the right breed...both for the job and for the PR. Good companion, photographs well......Maybe something tall, skinny, with a funny name? Great Dane?

    That's how I discovered "Blue Laws."

    Kentucky closes their liquor stores on Election day. It was the damnest thing.  I went out for some cigarettes, and people were sitting in there cars for the store to open at 8:00 PM.  I didn't know what was going on, so I started talk'n with the folks, who told me, "I imagine they don't have Sunday Laws in New York."  LOL!
