George Lopez Endorsed Barack Obama in Houston

Following the Houston Chronicle Endorsement and the announced today upcoming Houston Toyota Center appearance on Election Night Tuesday, and an extremely aggressive Precinct Captain Training Schedule, I attended an event in Downtown Houston today where George Lopez endorsed Barack Obama for President.  Mr Lopez is well known for being the first Latino with a Named Network TV show, George Lopez.

Houston is working very hard to make Texas Obama Country.  George Lopez's incredible Endorsement makes our job that much easier.  Tonight, George will perform at the Toyota Center infront of 17,000 Houstonians, discuss his support of Barack and ask them to join the campaign by Text Message. Following this event, we'll have deep recruits in every district, precinct and block of Houston, a city with 26 Delegates at stake.

The News media was in Attendance, the Chronicle, Several TV Stations, however George was unable to personally attend.  

In a phone-in to a crowd of 100's at the Houston HQ, George Lopez said Barack Obama was the best man to represent the interests of hispanics. He stated that he intended to campaign some for Sen. Obama over the next week, adding that he felt he would have a larger impact in El Paso than Hillary.

He did note that the night before in Denver, he discussed his support of Obama and there was a huge applause.  Because this was the first event George had held in a long while, a knee injury kept him from attending a rally where he was to present his endorsement in person.

This is powerful in Texas, and having George Lopez and Jim Hightower accompany Barack Obama around Texas next week should make huge headlines.

    get in.  Here in Seattle the Key Arena opened it's doors at 11:00 am, but only the first 20,000 people were able to get in.  3000 people had to stand outside.  Many people started lining up at 6 am.

      we'll get a special section to sit in close to the stage if we work the crowd control for 5 hours.  We have to show up 2 hours before doors open to get the line prepped.

      They're looking for 200 volunteers and have nearly that many already.

        in the beginning...I hate to say it, but in Seattle they did NOT make special arrangements for the volunteers, and as we were working there were no seats left by the time we figured we should probably go in.  We thought for a long time we would not get to see him at all, but finally found someone who let us in to a standing room area.

        Seriously, ask about this when they're doing your orientation.  I was kind of p.o.'ed (though not as much as I would have been had we not gotten to see him).

  I have lived in a largely hispanic part of Los Angeles County most of my life.  My hispanic neighbors speak English.  Indeed, I think a study shows that 79% of hispanic voters get their information primarily in English.  A George Lopez ad would do more to turnout the hispanic vote for Obama than a spanish ad.

  Happened to catch a clip of Bill Clinton on CNN today where he described the quirky Texas Primary/Caucus.

  65% of delegates selected based on primary results.
  35% of delegates selected by a separate caucus on the SAME day.
  You are allowed to vote in both the primary and the caucus.

  WTF?

  The Dems would be well advised to take a good long hard look at the nominating process this year and do something to establish some semblance of sanity and uniformity as to how states select delegates to send to the nominating convention.

      it's about getting someone to take a closer or a second look. There have been several times when I've been choosing among primary candidates and an endorsement by someone I respect has caused me to pause and look at another candidate again before dismissing him/her.

      it's not about george lopez telling anyone HOW to vote.  it is about a community leader being willing to put his name on the line to help provide more support for someone he feels is a good candidate.

  but if the latino vote would join forces with the african american vote, they could form a strong coalition not only for getting Barack nominated and voted into office, but just think of the power that could be weilded in the legislature.  That would account for at least 30% of the vote in most states, if not more, if I am not mistaken.  Afterall, the latino interests seem to be fairly closely aligned with that of African Americans.  a large number of Hispanics live in the same or very similar communities as African Americans which have been for years plagued by socio-economic problems such as gangs, poor performing schools, a stagnate minimum wage, no healthcare, poor affordable housing, etc.  seems like if somehow the too sides could be convincced of this, it could potentially  turn our government on its head.  

  To quote Barack, "There is no reason in hell why anyone who has a job and works in the UNited States should be living in poverty.  we all see it too often.  people working 60 hours per week and living paycheck to paycheck.  it's immoral and I detest it, but to change it, I think those living in such conditions need to wake up and recognize who their real allies are.

    When a whole subsection of the population is impoverished, the result is more often competition and violence rather than cooperation. It's a natural effect of desperation.

      both groups need the same things.  they live in the same neighborhoods, their children attend the same schools, and they work at the same jobs.  it makes no logical sense to have animosities.  if they just fought together, they could theoretically fight for a larger pie to split.
