"Hillary4U&Me" was ridiculed here in a brief, funny Thursday night Daily Kos diary, which didn't make the rec list:

Hillary's Answer to the "Yes We Can" Video.

But that of course wasn't literally true; "Hillary4U&Me" was posted four months ago. Even so, it was new to most of us on Daily Kos...

From Thursday, when it had only a few thousand hits, the YouTube hit-meter on 'Hillary4U&Me' is now at 352,000 views and counting (5,000 in the time to write this diary). It appears that 'Hillary4U&Me' is getting out, going viral, just as its makers hoped!

Unfortunately, it took Hillary's recent slide in popularity for the YouTube video to achieve this. That should teach all of our candidates that when they experiment with New Media, there can be surprising and unintended consequences, such as this one.

        This story just goes to prove that the road to hell in the blogosphere is paved with good intentions.

        Last August, Gene Wang, Silicon Valley executive (he handles the overseas marketing for Hewlett-Packard's handheld division) and ardent Sen. Hillary Clinton supporter, decided to do something to support her. Last August he got together a lot of young people and some musicians ... He uploaded the video to YouTube and it sat there for a while .. but on the Internet, nothing remains buried for long.

        ...  Whatever the reason, "Hillary4U&Me" was rediscovered this week. The result was a bloodbath.

        The video quickly became fodder for the kind of attacks that one can only find in the blogosphere. The reaction was so negative, some bloggers actually put forward the theory that it was created by the Obama camp to discredit Clinton.

        But to his credit, Wang is not backing down. He told The New York Times that he's proud of the work he's done.

        "I do agree that some of the Obama videos are better. But we have the better candidate by far," he wrote in an e-mail message. He added: "For all the naysayers, I'd like to see their YouTube music video."
        He believes that the criticism is born of the antagonism some Obama supporters feel toward Clinton. And, far from being discouraged, he said the critics have inspired him: "It kind of makes me want to do another one."

          There are a few tells here. The video has loads of footage of HRC from the Clinton campaign, and just look at where it is shot... This wasn't put together without the campaign's blessing, I'm quite sure.

          And how does Wang get that comment-frozen YouTube page?

          This has (barely) plausible campaign deniability about it.

      when this person comes to trial for the murder of his classmate, what do you think the likely defense that will be proffered will be for his shooting his classmate in the head will be?

      gay panic is as likely a defense as imaginable.

      need i remind you that one of the men who brutally murdered matthew shepherd tried to use "gay panic" as his defense?

      "gay panic" is a grotesque recasting of blaming the victim.  gay panic defenses ultimately are predicated on the belief that being queer is the crime; killing or assaulting someone queer is understandable and justifiable because queers are scary entities.  

      so because the person harmed was queer, by there very nature they are responsible for the assault they endured.  the perpetrator of the assault is not to blame for the assault; the victim of the assault brought the assault upon themselves by being queer.

      the legitimate "hillary4U&me" video -- the second one, NOT the one with the guys watching the scatological video "two girls and a cup" -- does not make me feel "gay panic."  it does not make me afraid of queers and it does not make me feel so scared that if and when i am in the presence of someone lesbian or gay that i will react to my fear of them and hurt them and with just cause.

      so again, if you would, could you please tell me what makes the gay panic comment so funny?

      i'm gay.

      and utterly harmless?

          To use an analogy, when black people get coded words of dismissal, that are not outright bigotry, but snide and racist- isn't it a good thing that white people get insulted on their behalf- when black people have far more things to worry about?

      I am offended.  The diarist uses the first video to insinuate that men watching this really bad hillary supporter video will somehow go into "gay panic".  The diarist continues pushing homophobia by insinuating that there is nothing wrong with the concept of 'gay panic'.  What if it was 'black panic'?  What if those were black people in that video and that white boy was laughing at the silly black people, having a 'black panic' rather than a 'gay panic'.

      This is fucking homophobic, it is sickening.

        that just isn't there for most people. Many other readers were amused or, at the least, unoffended. In any case, I apologize.

        Just so you know, my sentence with the phrase 'gay panic' modifies the video Hillary4U&Me, and not the reaction video with the young man. Hillary4U&Me is truly cringe-inducing for a lot of gay people, including me.

        I'm a huge admirer of Mort Sahl, and of his edgy, ambivalent political humor. I know the phrase 'gay panic' is loaded, and it was a challenge to see if I could use it both ways, as it were, and make some or most of my (gay) readers laugh.

        I think I mostly succeeded.

          but I am not reading in a meaning, I don't think you are actually see how this is offensive.  I don't know how to explain it in a way other than the analogy I provided above.

          The use of 'gay panic' in this way downplays the actual and terrible connotation this terms possesses.  It is so very often that people approach 'gay' issues with such a off-handed nature that they forget the actual power that words and the way in which they use them can be hurtful.  

          For another example, 'gay panic' as it was used in this diary is not too dissimilar from people using terms like 'that's so gay' or 'how gay' to describe something awkward or unpopular.  Many people don't even notice this type of language as hurtful or bigoted, but it is.  This is why I used the language interchange in the first analogy.  Saying 'that's so black/nigger" or "how nigger" would not be considered humorous- but rather, racist or bigoted.

          Now, in large part, this is a problem of the gay rights 'movement' for allowing this sort of disengagement.  I don't think its really a fault issue, but I am still going to call it out when I see it.
