Kossians: What Are You Listening To?

Alright, it's Sunday night of a three day weekend, getting nigh round midnight in these parts. Things seem to be slowing down here at Kos as we trundle off to dream of stump speeches and ARG polls.

Music is my thing...goes well with being a fervent political junkie.  Provides a nice sound track.  My preference is to keep expanding what I listen to...So I come here, with hat in hand, asking you to tell me what you are enjoying.  Expand my horizons.  Expand the horizons of your fellow Kossians.

So I thought I'd come here again and check out who is listening to what.  No matter who we are supporting, we can appreciate each other's music, right?  Well, mostly.  So, c'mon, tell the group what's floating your boat? chilling you out? blowing your mind?

  Hard Rain, live album from '75-ish I believe.  Not sure if many are familiar with his live stuff.  But he changes it up big time; to the point where its impossible to sing along.  Maggie's Farm off this album is ridiculously good.  I definately suggest checkin it out.

  Ironic in that we think he's more conservative than Hillary.

  I honestly was getting the vibe that they really preferred Hillary over all the others in the race.  That's almost amazing...

  They talked about how there is no passion, no communication from the conservative side...  and I keep thinking how much passion and communication we are getting from Barack Obama.  Conservatism was a success 'cos they had people communicating a passionate response.  Barack Obama could do the same with progressivism... wouldn't that be great?

  I have to say a good word about Neko Case anytime I am asked!  "If water could sing, this is what it would sound like," someone said in a review the other day.  Aside from her amazing vocals, she is one hell of a songwriter.  She's easily my favorite current artist.  I just keep going back to her, and I never seem to get tired of it.

  Prepping myself for 2 new releases in March by British bands Elbow and Supergrass. Going back through each band's catalogue leads to these 2 assertions:

  Supergrass is one of the goddamn best pop rock bands of the last decade.

  After seeing "No Country for Old Men" I was explaining to a friend last night why I really detested it, and at a certain point I just broke into a rant against adding to a world filled with real, gruesome violence and death our own fevered imaginings of more violence and death. There has to be something more, we have to be something better.

  And then at a certain point in that rant I fell into describing the band Of Montreal, which feels exactly like the answer to a yearning for a different, better world than we live in right now. Though I recognize there is a subtle darkness to their vision, to borrow a phrase that gets tossed around here pretty frequently, I think they're incorrigible hopemongers.

  Radio Paradise, free online commercial free alt rock radio station, lots of good newer bands there
  Snow Patrol, especially got into Final Straw in my car obsessively. Can't get enough Spitting Games or Chocolate, two great catchy and smart tunes, but the whole album is lyrically smart and musically rich.
  new Shelby Lynne-- she covers Dusty Springfield's hits well with her great heart filled singing, with a stripped down sound, tasteful soul/bluesy acoustic pop, a kick to hear her do Burt Bacharach.
  new Diana Krall, "from this moment on", I'm guessing Elvis Costello really taught her how to sing much more soulfully. She's never had much range or texture, but now she sings this with much more nuance, depth and feeling, hitting lower registers, getting breathy and sexy, it's great. This one's her best singing performance, IMO and Tommy LiPuma's arrangements/production are outstanding as usual.
  Renee Olstead, A love that will last is about one of the most romantic songs ever, the rest of her stuff is pretty good, her voice is great, nice arrangements, she's no jazz or vocal master like Natalie Cole, but she is romantic with a saucy, sexy and talented young voice.
  Beach Boys, Wild Honey, their motown style album is in my car stereo and has been a favorite since I was a kid; uniquely rich and sweet.
  Collective Soul, Blender & Dosage, are always in my car stereo, and have been driving music favorites for the past several years. Both those CD's have really cool multiple changing musical phrases in each song with layered instrumentation and rocks out while you drive, the melodies in the guitars, keyboards and singing interplay into ecstatic metallic melodic satisfaction.
  Marisa Monte and Gal Costa, my favorite Brazillian women singers. A wonderful pastiche of pop, folk, afrobeat, jazz and bossa nova that always blend beautifully and never clash. Beautiful melodies delivered by terrific singers with great range and feeling.

    Marisa Monte and Gal Costa...they take up some expensive real estate on my iPod.  Thanks for the other leads.  I had no idea that "Wild Honey" was a "motown" album.  Will check...I recently binged on Pet Sounds...the moment has passed but my respect soared profoundly.

    •  Yeah, Wild Honey was inspired by soul and

      the motown sound. They even do a cover of Stevie Wonder's I was made to love her.

      From the (not very good) Rolling Stone review of it:

      "Darlin" is the song in which the Beach Boys really take R&B styling (which is what they did obviously with "I Was Made to Love Her," and less obviously, but not less subtly, on "Wild Honey,") and make it work in an original way. "How She Boogalooed It" recalls, in another R&B effort, the surfin' guitar rhythms of the Beach Boys of yore.

      It's kind of amusing that the Beach Boys are suddenly re-discovering rhythm and blues... but it is probably indicative of the transmogrification of the blues that is making R&B currently so popular with the public at large.

      mymusic.com says quite accurately:

      They emerged into a world that had forever changed and that no longer really needed them, which is perhaps why they felt free, on WILD HONEY, to ditch both their sun-and-surf roots and their more recent studio explorations and turn out a goofy, good-humored, faux-R&B album.

      It makes this CD different from their others, and some love that, others don't but I think it's rich and beautiful, and it always makes me sing along with the great harmonies and bouncy arrangements.

      It was their first record after the famous Smile/Smiley Smile sessions disaster (which occurred just after Pet Sounds). Now it's often sold in a double CD with Smiley Smile, which I think is an awful record, so I'd advise finding the stand alone version instead.

      I'm a big fan of the lesser known Beach Boys records they put out in the 1970's when their popularity waned and often Brian wasn't involved, he was in and out dealing with his depression problems. Those records are amazingly good and were forgotten-- consistently good with no filler material, more mature songwriting and fantastic beautiful music and singing. They're worth checking out, the subsequent albums after Wild Honey and all of them made in the 1970's are excellent. Greatest Hits, Volume III, the Brother Years, is another place to start-- has most of the best songs from that era, and if you get it and like it, then you could collect the individual CD's from that era. I love them.

      Sorry to be so verbose, but I get excited about this stuff.
