For nearly a year now, Fox News has focused numerous hours of reports on Natalee Holloway, a young girl on vacation in Aruba who went missing in May of 2005. It seems like every night they talk endlessly about this case.
This is not the first dead white girl reported on ad infinitum by Fox News. Remember Laci Peterson? Of course, Fox News can't cover dead white girls all the time, so they will often search for other useless stories that allow them to cleverly avoid the latest Bush Administration debacle. From the Michael Jackson Trial to David Entwistle to teachers having sex with their students; Fox News is your source for things unrelated to Iraq, security failures, Katrina's devastation, gas prices, Iran, North Korea, children being left behind, and outrageous tax cuts and corporate welfare.
Fox News focuses on what people want to hear about: Dead white girls, wealthy murderers, celebrity child molesters, and horny teachers. For instance, on their
webpage today they mention Natalee Holloway and the Duke Lacrosse rape case on the front page. They mention Michael Jackson down below, and the top headline article deals with, guess who, Natalee Holloway.
It is presumable that the Holloway case will go away. People will stop tuning in and not care anymore. If that happens, Fox News must frantically search for another dead white girl, or a celebrity on trial for murder (preferably black or Hispanic). They have no other choice. The most compelling stories of the day all have to do with White House scandals and failures.
This didn't use to be the case. Once the Iraq War started, Fox News was there to tell you just how un-American you were if you didn't support the war. They called for the boycott of French products. As the war dragged on, they trumpeted the capture of Saddam Hussein and lambasted Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. They told us how much of a traitor John Kerry was in Vietnam before the 2004 election. In 2005, they mocked the heroic acts of Cindy Sheehan and slammed Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They were the masters of spin and could repel any attack on their neo-conservative brethren.
But now things are different. They have conservative authors, former Nixon, Reagan, and Bush I officials, Sandra Day O'Conner, and at least six retired military generals calling out the Bush Administration for various transgressions. They see Bush's poll numbers in the 30's and Cheney's poll numbers in the teens. I think the poll numbers for the Republican Congress are in the negatives by now.
They have nothing else to report but trash news stories that have nothing to do with people's lives. Fox News isn't reporting political propaganda anymore; they are reporting an episode of the OC. So for all the neo-conservatives out there, I suggest you go kidnap a rich white girl, rape a stripper with your lacrosse team, or send your kid to Michael Jackson's house. Do it now, before the Bush Administration screws up again!
