Obama's first 100 days!

Fri Feb 22, 2008 at 02:16:13 PM PDT

Here are some joint suggestions from myself and (Kossack lurker TBA).  It's time to get serious about what a Pres. Obama administration should be asking of the new veto-proof Congress.  We feel that some of the Foreign Affairs issues are more amenable to immediate repair, being that they are so clear cut and fall to the Executive Branch to fix.  The domestic agenda will be far more difficult to pass quickly, but needs to begin with sharp and vivid distinctions between the Dem and Rep points so that these get completed in the 1st term.

  1. Close Gitmo, Restore Habeus, end torture and rendition - all one act!
  1. Sign Kyoto or make a stiffer, new treaty.
  1. Reinvigorate the State dept. in its efforts to make our allies aware of our new direction.
  1. Rollback W's tax-cuts early! Switch/add cuts to 'unpatriotic' companies that outsource.  Economic stimulus, job retraining, Income tax restructuring and tuition relief - all one act!
  1. Lay down FDR's Executive Order privileges from WW II.  Something formal ending legitimacy of presidential signing statements.
  1. Redeploy troops in the wider Middle East theater, close some previously permanent bases (esp. on 'Holy Soil').

+++++++++++++ Extra Credit bonus points++++++++++++++

  1. Eventually send rested troops to Afghanistan to finish the real war.
  1. Begin to fill Federal Court vacancies.
  1. Outline the new Green 'WPA' projects that will rebuild aging infrastructure and wean us off fossil fuels.
  1. Begin the grand healthcare debate, with immediate reversal of non-negotiable Rx prices in the Medicare/Medicaid Bill.

I invite the community to reorder or add to this list as we see fit.

  •  Veto-proof Congress (2/3rds) is wildly optimistic (0+ / 0-)

Even getting to 60 senators is a major longshot.

We are ALWAYS underdogs. The other side has limitless funds, skulduggery, domination of the media and the legal system, and an electoral college advantage.

Inside the world of war profiteers

From prostitutes to Super bowl tickets, a federal probe reveals how contractors in Iraq cheated the U.S.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—Inside the stout federal courthouse of this Mississippi River town, the dirty secrets of Iraq war profiteering keep pouring out.

Hundreds of pages of recently unsealed court records detail how kickbacks shaped the war's largest troop support contract months before the first wave of U.S. soldiers plunged their boots into Iraqi sand.

The graft continued well beyond the 2004 congressional hearings that first called attention to it. And the massive fraud endangered the health of American soldiers even as it lined contractors' pockets, records show.

  •  I'd like an executive transparency order (1+ / 0-)

Basically, an order implementing his government transparency plans.  (Because the vast majority of them don't require congressional approval.)

  •  China Summit (0+ / 0-)

I'd like to see this as a top priority.  The goal should be to strengthen our relationship with China through diplomacy, and move away from the growing militarization of the relationship.  But the talks should not be wimpy - we need to raise trade, product safety, carbon emissions, Darfur.  But we should also back-off from Taiwan, make it clear that China can straighten out its relationship with Taiwan and we are not going to go to war over it.  The ultimate goal should be to make China our security partner for the 21st Century, in places like Africa and Central Asia.  The US/China relationship is by far the most important international relationship there is.  Military confrontation with China is the neo-cons' ultimate wet dream - that's what justifies spending on star wars, nuclear subs, and all of the other high-tech, high-priced military crap that they love to play with but which is basically useless in dealing with terrorism.  If I see Obama moving on this quickly, I will feel very, very good about his administration.

  •  i want (0+ / 0-)

corporate advertising and propaganda off PBS.

I want all of The Bush Crime Family's hires all over the federal government fired, using a Reduction in Force. (During Clinton's presidency, VP Gore used a RIF to reduce the federal government by 20%.)

I want the crazy Christians out of the military, particularity the generals who put God before country, and think the US is on a crusade, or should be. I also want the Air Force Academy out of Colorado Springs, a hot bed of evangelical activity.
